Where did the melodies go?

There are too little melodies in psytrance nowadays. I was at S.U.N. Festival and O.Z.O.R.A. this year, and although I think Ozora was generally a better festival, the music was generally without a doubt way better at Sun. The purpose of this thread is not to discuss these festivals though (so please don't), but the simple reason the music was better at Sun was that there was much old school music which included melodies. At Ozora however, there were hardly any old school music, and (hence) almost no melodies. I could write miles about how wrong and stupid I think it is to make trance music without melodies, since melodies are imo an essential part of trance) but that's not really what I want to talk about here either (please allow me to ventilate my opinions anyway ). If you don't agree with me that's ok, but you can stop reading now cause this thread is not for you. If you do - like me - like melodies however, please go on reading.

What I'm actually doing here is a search. There does happen - although very rarely - that newer artists make some song which has melodies in them and I always get quite satisfied when that happens. I want to find those melodic songs and I want help to find them.

Let me give you some examples to clarify what I'm looking for. There are two artists, Battle of the Future Buddhas and Ka-Sol, who makes music that also in this decade (10's) still has melodies. For example listen to "Battle of the Future Buddhas - Drums in the Deep". I don't know how to describe this song, but if we make an allegory and say that most of today's psytrance songs are like mice (the animals), this song is a fucking DRAGON.

Why aren't there more dragons?!

Another good example would be "Ka-Sol - Pricken". Please listen to it to see what I mean (you can find it on youtube). The melodical element in this song is perhaps structurally quite simple, but still make such a huge difference for the feeling I get when I listen to it.

I will give you a third example, that you might be more familiar with. Let's take the artist "Para Halu", most of his music is not particularly melodic as far as I've heard, but at Ozora 2012 he played a song "Domination RMX", which contains a melody 05:44 minutes into the track. It's again not a very complicated melody but that's not the point, this melody is actually quite simple - simple but EFFECTIVE.

For me only a melody as simple as this takes the whole music to a new level and it suddenly becomes TRANCE (according to my definition). THAT is what I'm looking for. I'm tired of hearing music that's just "weird sounds" and no melody, I want more songs with some fucking melody!

Please write what newer psytrance songs there are (let's say later than 2006+, but preferably 2008+ or 2010+) that has MELODY in them. I refuse to believe there are so few nowadays. There must be more. Please help me find them.

One more thing, if you happen to be a psytrance artist/producer who does have melodies in your songs, I'm happy to meet you, you are what I'm looking for. You are also free to share your opinion why you decided to include melodies in your songs.

Peace out!

Honestly theres no shortage of stuff out there, guess it just wasnt played where you were. Check out the darkshire album serenity, or any of the more recent para halu. Plus theres all the neo-goa and lots of high bpm melodic stuff.

Since you seem particularly interested in the scando stuff, theres a few abrahadabra tracks w melodic elements too.           http://soundcloud.com/herbert-quain

Lots of people doing tunes with melodies today...and I mean lots.

I love a good synth riff, so I put it in my tunes, same goes for acid lines, I am a sucker for a distorted acid line.

Terrafractyl. If you like melody (and harmony! egads!) and haven't heard of him...you're welcome

Also, the new San & Tac EP is awesome too and very melodic.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I think there is a lot of melodic stuff being released, the artists just have a hard time finding gigs or feel like their music is not much apreciated in the scene because all people under the influence want is a big kick and bassline... I mean just take a look at most progressive stuff being played in festivals: a huge break into kick + bass solo. lol

I'm making this style, lots of melodies: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/flembaz-magic-mint           Free album out now:

Let's get one fact straight. Trance does not equal melodies. In it's purest form trance equals a repetitive rhythm that puts a person into a state of trance.

Not to say I do not like melodies. I do. But the evolution of trance has gone from very simple rhythmic patterns and some simple melodic patterns to overkill (some over-layered Goa and Full on etc.) and now back to more monotone basic patterns again even though it's pretty damn boring and too fast. Or way too cheesy. IMO

Techno has more to do with trance these days (when speaking about obtaining a state of trance through repetitive rhythms)than most trance made.

+1

but goa trance and everything that came after that was never real trance in the sense you mean it. these genres evolved from trance into something different. too much going on, too many breakdowns etc. i'd describe it rather as traveling or exploring music.

I think the fact that less melodic music is popular these days, is as a counter-reaction to the long period where the very melodic full on was extremely popular. It was the same with the minimal, techtrance and progressive trance wave, which came as a reaction to the very melodic goa/psytrance and nitzhonot before the millennium.

As someone else pointed out, there is still a lot of melodic music released by the way.           DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

i think the problem is:

many people dont like how to make melodical music without being cheasy...

i think its all about the way you written the melodies, its possibly to written rich and exotic melodies that will turn the sound psicadelic if you use good synthesis to fill with it...

the problem is that, again most of producers dont actually have the enough talent to do it, they simply try to use stereotyped synths and easy made melodies that end up turning tracks cheasy like hell... so due to that, some people dont like melodic trance, and others dont even try to make that sort of trance...

if you ear music written by a good psicadelic artist like Ott, Simon Posfords, Erez (from IM) guys that have melodical psicadelicness in their blood, it will allways sound amazing...

its not easy to make psicadelic music melodical without being cheasy, and most of artists this days try to make tracks easly, they choose to be like the others, they dont want to risk or make anything that counts, they simply want to be on the usualy circle... and that makes you complaint...

about comparing Sun Festival with Ozora, i guess that Sun festival crew have the atributes that made Ozora Famous, Ozora may keep the fame for more years, but Sun will for sure taken the attention, because they are superior in terms of organizing and chosing artists (at least its what i think...)

to make good melodic composition some musical skill is a plus; something that is not really necesarry for making farts blurps and bleeps.. it s one reason you may have more poor music in term of composition ,melodie ,arrangement..
making the music good for trance is a totally different skill/sense and to me it s what really matter for dancefloor..
