I agree with a lot of what is being said in this thread. I think the dancefloor suffers when the music is too monotonous/dark/fast for too long. I guess it's supposed to replicate the "balls to the walls" feeling in a psychedelic trip, when you are uncomfortable and a little scared. But it just makes me bored, and I can't get into a good dancing rhythm. I'm going to go ahead and promote myself, since I have been striving to make music that includes melodies, but still keeps it intelligent and hopefully not cheesy!
Suntrip are putting out 4 albums that will be melodic goa trance music later this year and early next year. They also put out Blacklight Moments compilation which is IMO their best melodic compilation to date.
Zion604 out out Phoenix compilation which for a very reasonable price contains 1 CD of remastered rare melodic Psy tracks, and a second CD of modern melodic psy trance /chill out.
There's not a huge amount of the classic sound being remade but there's enough.
Also check out Neo Goa Label on Ektoplazm.

Amazing track it is!
Sounds quite analog too
Will this one be released any time soon?
Lots of analog sounds where in my original, so yeah it sounds analog.
It will be released this year hopefully in an EP.

Martian Arts - Mind Over Rhythm

A good melody is the story teller above the rythmic trance! Of course if there are too many layered melodies the story is lost in the chaos
I agree.
And thinking about Kristian's comment, which I agree with, I wanted to say the piano is technically a percussion instrument (felted hammers, hitting something that resonates)

i think melodies are still there and have always been there for some set of the psy scene(s)
the dark psy scene kinda outlawed melodies unless they are ugly, ironic, or funny and non-sequitors...
but i tend to think those biker badasses will end up going with the hardcore scene or coming back to the real world where the selective use of melody and harmony can be nice in the right way...(depends upon the taste...but most everyone else in any style of anything uses SOME melody- and the dark psy scene usually has a tuned bassline and kick last time I checked... or it sounds bad...simple)

Melody was not dominant in the darkpsy scene (which is mostly a thing of the past imo), but certainly was not outlawed-What about all the releases from that scene featuring melodic work by Zolod, CPC, Electrypnose, Samadhi, Ghreg on Earth, Darkshire, and even Ocelot? Off the top of my head, I can also think of melodic tracks by Naked Tourist, Savage Scream, Penta, Xena, Glooex, and Kindzadza.
In terms of the modern "darkpsy" scene, which seems to mean fast bpm psytrance to a lot of people, there's tons of melodic work. Two of the most recent compilations I've heard from that scene - Kamino Records Universus A Aum and Noise Poison - Noise Poison festival have lots of melodic components.
I truly agree. Melodies are really lacking in todays psytrance. Your average full-on dude makes some killer bassdrum and a killer one-note bassline and then you got the same fart sounds we heard for 15 years now. Enough already. Use some creativity and write songs, don't make lame productions. When you can't tell one track apart from another, something is seriously wrong.
Goblim might be happy to know there is a new Buddha-album released about right now. This week or the next. You can listen to samples from it here. https://soundcloud.com/battlebuddhas
D-Dave, that's exactly why I went through my 500+ cd collection from this genre a month ago.
I culled it to 150 worth keeping. The rest were given to friends who wanted them.
The big decision came when I realized most the time when I was listening to the music I'd go through 20-30 tracks at a time and nothing stood out. It was just background noise.
Mostly what I kept was from the 90's except for Rockdenashi, Mighty Quinn, Osom Music, Kamino Records, Horns & Hoof, Boshke Beats, early TIP World, Suntrip & a few of the other labels reissuing 90's material (DAT, Anjuna, Zion 604).
I don't miss any of the CDs I got rid of, actually felt like a weight off my shoulders clearing the space.

I like to think that I dip my trunk into the tune-pool from time to time. Check out "Aspect Overturn" that came out yesterday on with release:
