interesting topic..

zebra cuts nicely, especially with fm.

and i would add massive even though i do not like it that much.

Synth1, Sylent1, they are really warm, but too much warmness is not so good sometimes! this is when Largo and Zebra come in, they are not so warm, but u can make a perfect mix using this 4, they kinda complete each other, atleast in my tracks.
Nord modular G2 is the most cutting synth for me ever, i can make up to 4 sounds in the mids and in the highs, without sounding bad. Nord lead 2 is close, but not as much as the G2.

Massive is bad for multilayered music in my expirience, it sounds nice, but for big massive sounds.

I avoid this days the noisy Vsti like Albino 3, the highs are made really bad, they use noise instead harmonics to fill in the empty space, and you must cut the shit out of it to sounds nice in a track           VA - Spiritual Science out now!

yeah the nord is the va synth that cut and sit really well... zebra is like virus to me , it feel a bit lazy /don t really cut on some sounds like supersaw leads compared to a plug like largo..i was a/b ing some synths and the difference of punch/impact you can get for the same kind of patchs is really surpising. some synth will deliver a ready to sit in the mix kind of sound while some other for the same kind of leads will never feel totally right..

surge can have a similar sound to largo and seems to cut really great too

klippel if you can give a try to largo i would be intrested to hear your thought compared to zebra...i like a lot both softsynth but to me largo is more suited for modern punchy leads the way it sit.

Zebra for sure.
Hmm I never try Largo so i don't know that is better or not than Zebra
Like Demoniac said, Massive is great when there is nothing more than drums. It break my heart when i must cut something from this vsti

But I think that most of today popular vsti sit good in the mix. Many times only subbass cut + panorama is everything what we need.

Btw. I take a big lesson from your post PoM, when You talk about using minimal of EQ, like SSL channel with only 4 'parts' of eq. It really works           http://www.beatport.com/release/cross-the-atoms/1042450

zebra to me feel a bit like massive...but maybe it s cause i tend to use 2 or 3 oscillators for many leads in it... it s maybe cause it s also not very bright so it may cut less in the mix for some type of leads

nice man if it helped you,it can be good to force you to work more on the synths and to avoid over equing .. but the cons are these limitations ,not very flexible and that you can t use narrow q that are sometimes needed

now i m doing these test i find zebra to sound muddy ... maybe its my sound design dunno..if you guys try largo and compare with the same kind of patch you may be surprised when a/b directly, to me it sit more right in the mix with a more "finished commercial sound" ..

i find motivation back to make some psy so i test all my tools..with lot of a/b for what work bets for psy for me..and so far for now largo and strobe deliver for no mud and punchy lead sound..for music to kill the dancefloor... full on strobe a bit a pain to program but once you know a few tricks like detuning 2 voice and paning them hard left/right you can make psy leads with a good quality to them..

+1 es2

strobe,largo,ace...in the context of mix are the one who impressed me the most when comparing how the synths sit and feel right without extra processing ,maybe it just suit my programin style .

surge,dune,es2 also great but surge and dune not really needed with the 3 synths above, es2 have a more unic caractere that can be usefull

sylenth, massive cut a bit less and don't sit as nice in my mix.

using the right synths for the right sound can make way more difference than what compressor or eq you use..sometimes the difference is just wow..some sytnh can sound way more muddy and lazzy on the same patch and don't feel totally right in the mix.

Got some brilliant Wavetable FM sounds from ES2 lately, that complement my NL1 very nicely.
Also aliasing is not nearly as bad on the ES2 as it is on the TI.
Some sounds from old Deedrah tracks that I would swear where analog, much to my surprise when he sent the arrangement for remixing, was the ES2.

Good to see the pros use ES2 quite a bit. For me its the best native synth yet. I still prefer it for many tasks to a 1000+ hardware digital synth and it comes free with Logic that costs 150€!

Generally the included synths in Logic Pro are amazing, especially when you consider they come free with the software.
Ultrabeat is my favorite digital drum synth.
Sculpture is great for evolving pshysical moddeling patches with multiple breakpoint envelopes.
ES2 is a true workhorse...crazy how it sounds so good and the CPU requirements are is so low.
