Seems to me that psy-trance is characterised by a fast, heavy, nearly sub-base beat which literally mesmerises (tweaks the emotional centres), whilst the other, lighter, often distorted/novel computer generated sounds "over the top of the base" invite the imagination to roam freely. The "psychedelic" ("mind-manifesting" - to give it it's original definition) aspect, is aided and abetted by hallucinogens. The minimalistic approach of tribal/minimal trance seems to highlight each of these two aspects, which can be elevated to a high degree depending on both the music, atmosphere and potency of hallucinogen ingested. Although these characteristics seem separate, they seem to fuse at their peak into that inarticulable sense of one-ness. Interestingly at that point if you look around, you can discern the other folks that are "there" with you, from those who are only at the observer/listener stage (OK - not tripping). I know this is simplistic - but so were the tribal drumming sessions of prehistorical peoples - and I reckon they were visiting the same places, albeit perhaps more rudimentary. We have much more (different) understanding and knowledge in addition to lost understanding and knowledge. So our variety of musical forms and technological awareness have ramped up the experience. The computers, hi-fi systems etc. in alliance with old Dr Hoffman's contributions give us a totally novel situation. So maybe the psychedelic aspect cannot be described because there are no metaphors to bring to our aid - you just simply "know" when music is psy-trance in the same way you know you are "there" when it all comes together. You certainly know when it not psy-trance, and there's nuthin like it.

So, you're saying Techno is psytrance, since it falls into the definition of having a fast heavy near sub-bass beat which mesmerises, with the top elements doing the same. And no, I don't think minimal is more trancey than other forms of trance - as was implied by what you said (as you said - this style highlights those aspects which define trance). You are over-generalizing. And no, trance doesn't have to be fast, because then you ignore all of the downtempo works which are definately trance.

Words fail to describe things that the human mind was never designed to digest - and psytrance wasn't a factor of our evolution.

Psy - Psychedelic - Colorful - Trippy - got it?
Its not a difinitive. I dont categorize any of it. I know psy when I hear it. I also know that some of this minimalistic naming is also very psychedlic. Its all standard. Call it what you want. I call it Trippy ass music.           -=Keep it Spiritual=-
