theres no such thing as one style of muisc being more intelligent or sophisticated
thats musical elitism
there is no reason, no reason whatsoever why minimalist should be more sophisticated thn full on muskc, there is no reason whatsoever why minimalist should contain only one note or two
why should this be the case? why cant there be one minimalist track that is musically stunning? ignoring just posytrance, as i said before, in the deep house scene there is a lot of exceptional music which is very minimal, using very few elements, perhaps that scene equivalent of psy-minimalist
these descriptions and definitions and barriers erected to surround and define a particular area of music- minimalist psytrance, 2 step drum and bass, 'breakbeat' uk g, are just put up in our heads
they are rules which are broken often without exception
if u dont like a type of music, fine, but thats not to say that this music has to be this way or that, or is definitely something or not, to be more complex or more intelligent

kaz's post is very interesting..
i'd not thought of it like that before but i guess it is fundamentally true..
with regards to this 'intelligent' thing - i mean come on kids - this is recreational music of the highest order but it is not a profoundly intellectual artistic statement... the notion of intelligence is completely irrelevant imo.

First, I love all types of trance so I'm not eliting over one's music.
And second, Minimal music is more intelligent because it makes your mind think and complete the sounds\instruments with your imagination. In full-on for example all the sounds are just there for you to enjoy!

well after readin all this i want to say that i totally agree with helen, sometimes i'm in mood for more psychedelic/melodic, sometimes less...
about 4 months ago i thought minimalistic is shit and i don't get close to it, but this days i'm listening to some and even producing.
i see that kind of argue in every place "psy vs. minimal", as i said for me it's music, if it's produced well, got some story or something atractive - i'll go with it!
everyone got his own taste, personally i don't like a lot of minimal tracks, my heart belongs mostly for psy.

Minimal can be very psychedelic (Shiva Chandra), and music which isn't progressive can be VERY intellectual (Koxbox). All of those stereotypes may be true some of the time... even most of the time - but they're not always true.
Progressive in music nowadays means ONE thing - music that derives from the progression (the structure) of the track. This is clearer with minimal - you notice the progression there since the music is really very much intended for those games. On the other side - it's easy to bring a lot of tracks which aren't very imaginative in the full-on style. If someone will tell me "what, Spiritual Antiseptic isn't progressive, so it's stupid" - that person simply doesn't know what he's talking about.
Stop with this "my music is better than your music" complex here - it's not helping anyone. If we aren't united in this - at least we shouldn't be in each other's face here. Good music is what you think is good music, or what anyone thinks is good music.

every time i wonder how trance ppl know to be king in their only and very small reality. everybody king of his own style and everyone hate each other. half year old trax hated by most of ppl and DAT mafia rule the world.
dont u got yet that NO MORE old good days then trance music was ONLY trance music ??
tech-trance,progressive trance, minimal trance, psy trance, goa trance, nitzhonot, club trance, trippy trance, hard trance, weird trance and ALL it sounds pretty similar. give it to somebody who dont realy into trance and he will not able to define differents.
no matter how u call it, its all about Electronic Dance Music. these days for sure...
alot house or tekno music sounds more trancy that alot trance acts. everybody release on every kind of label and everykind opf music. NO MORE borders...
only the DAT mafia still live in iilusions.... |

What makes a good full on track is the sophistication of the structure, the sound work and many many more things.
Even nitzhonot is intelligent in it's own special way.
