I've been listening to some great stuff recently like
Atmos - klein aber doctor
Is this song minimal?
Minimal progressive perhaps?
It certainly has much fewer sounds then your average Logic Bomb or GMS track.

Mike A - WORD! ) I 100% agree with you .....

though sometimes it's nice to dance with minimal music sounds.
about progressive: I think ppl got used to this term as being some technoish beat music and hard drums beat.

if you all remember the album from Indoor was called Progressive Trance and it was pure 96' goa So I don't even know who came up with this prorgessive idea today - I don't relate to it and I won't use this term if u allow me to .....

minimal is saying more with less. it doesnt mean that the track is boring, au contre - it means making interesting, progressing (not progressive) music using less samples/instruments. this is usualy created by playing with less melodic sounds (most use precussions or saw-like synths, what we call "ultramaflitzaizer"), which makes the track sound 'empty' and many times 'boring' to normal psy-trance listeners.

its all about perspective here - writing an interesting minimal track is as hard as writing a melodic one, and it doesnt come from lazyness. some ppl like this idea (and me among them) of saying more with less. respect this music as much as u want ppl to respect your own taste. stop this 'minimal suxx, full-on rulls' thingy. There are times where progressive-minimal is nice, and times when I like to hear melodies. as long as its psychodelic, interesting and well done - its fine with me.

Perhaps people who create minimal have slow processors and that's why they make their tracks simple           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

and dont forget psytrance isnt the only form of dance floor music, just because it doesnt conform to the old rules doesnt mean its unnacceptable..
take for example the Ramsey and Fen remix of What You Want by So More.. four to the floor uk garage, by your definitions minimal because it doesnt have as many sounds as Logic Bomb, but hardly soulless or unmusical

also i dont like the idea that just becuase somethings minimal means it only ahs one or two notes or cant be musical... theres no reason why that has to be the case

I like Helen's explanation the best so far. As long as its Psychadelic and it gets people going then it is good music for me.
I always thought progressive means that the track progresses as it goes along, changing sounds and speed as it goes along, while minimal tracks usually use the same sounds and bassline. But really this is a dumb discussion because we are just putting more and more labels and sub-categories on one very small genre which is Psy-Trance.
These labels have been evaporating before our eyes for the past few years and we are gettting a wider variety of sounds and experiences from all around the world. Everything has a time and place and I think a party without Shiva Chandra in the beggining and GMS in the middle with some Jaia at the end would not be a real trance experience for me. These are just the most radical examples that I could think of, but u know what I mean.
I like the DJ's that try to make a story out of their set instead of specializing in putting on individual killer tracks without trying to build something.           Both teams played hard

Helen said it very nicely- I don't have much to add but a quote from one of the best minimal artists ever:

"First of all, I am a real Minimalist, because I don't do very much. I know some minimalists who call themselves minimalist but they do loads of minimalism. That is cheating. I really don't do very much."
Robert Wyatt

If you really like psychedelic music, do yourself a favour and go listen to Rock Bottom.

And Cannibal, go listen to the Krumelur album, it's the piece of music that will make you like minimal trance, I think.           ---------------------------------------------

Short definition of trance music IMO: music that gets you into a trance.

Progressive music (not necessarily minimal) does this very well - progression of the track is a powerful tool to make it take over the mind. BUT, minimal music - that's music without too much "fat" on it - is not the only way to go. It's the one which is easiest to focus the attention on the progression of the track - since the sound isn't too cluttered at any time - it makes it easy to follow on the progressive level. That's why minimal and progressive go hand in hand so well.

Of course - if you expect the music to do more than take over the mind and body (eg - you want it to be of melodic value or have a lot of surprising developments that go against intuition, or whatever), than minimal isn't the way for you to go. That's why I love progressive minimal music at night at parties, and sometimes with the sunrise, but psy/goa really works for me better more later on (9+ AM). Sometimes you need a bit of freedom from the music as well.

So on one side - we have the people who like total chaos in their music (any real full-onist IMO has to be slightly insane because of this ), and those guys usually don't get along well with progressive, or the people who like total order and logic on the other side (that's the progressive minimal side). But really - these are two opposite approaches to the same idea, of getting into the music deeper.

There is a path in the middle (like Logic Bomb for instance), but it comes down to this - order vs. chaos. I for one prefer music that is well ordered and logical, but also very psychedelic - so right now my favorite act (excluding Posford, naturally) is Saiko Pod - progressive psy music. There's a style out there for each and every one of you, exactly what you need. On this happy note I'll stop my BSing here           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

Its bad that ppl are sayin minimal is boring\tha artists are lazy. Minimal trance is much more inteligent and sofisticated than full-on for example.

And as for progressive, what make a track progressive is its development and beat. Progys develop by adding another instrument each time. and the beat is repetitive and hard.
some progerssive tracks are minimal and some aren't. that depends on the fullness of the track.           REHAB is for quitters
