i have something on my mind that bothers me a long time...

A few days a go i played at a party...there were something between 500-600 people
the person that played before me played "night" music , i mean minimal progressive trance [if u can call it trance]

he played from 2:00 TO 4:00

the crowd loved the atmosphere and the music

and so... it was my turn to play.
the hour is 4:00 and im loading in the first cd
in my way to play morning music , musical full-on.

the crowed was fine , but they were dry as a hot day at summer !

the mix was excellent , the music was great !
the atmosphere...not

i believe that the crowed act like this because....you know , night night morning morning, well...can somebody explain why ?

what is the reason that people say...
"i cant dance to full on sounds at night"

i think its stupid ! (no affence but thats how i feel)

well maybe it has never occured to u: there are ppl which dont like full on at all...

and its funny over here minimal/progressive is rather considered to be morning music...

so when u visit a party with both styles (which is usally not the case anyway) u rather hear full on at night and progy in the morning.

It would be interesting to know exactly what tunes you started your set with... I get feeling that the change in music from prog to full-on was too obvious.

Perhaps if the transition (your intro tracks) had been a little more subtle then the flow may have helped the vibe, and thus gained the respect of the dancefloor.

Imo (from what you have described) it appears you wanted to instantly blast the floor with killarrrr bombs without building your set from the previous dj.

well mike theres a good point in the things u said...but my set sure had a composition.

i wanted to brake the progressive spirit and switch instantly to full-on,and i believe that this is my style and it works avery time.

i also believe that somehow the difference between these genres was too strong and the croud was unabled to adjust to the extreme change in b.p.m and music itself.

or...maybe it was just the croud
this problem never came up when i was playing, next time it will happen...ill admit that it was my fault.

no one is wiser than the crowd, if the music is good people dance, they are the best judges in the whole world.

Gran, there is plenty of full on starting from 139 bpm. If the dj before you finished "hard" at 138-140, u should maybe consider starting at that point. or, play your 145 madness, but pick a track with a long into even a minute or so, i found this to help. ofcourse it all depends on the design (if you got one) of your set:
1. pitch up (hyperbola style)
2. start harder and finish melodically and groovy.

If you played what you wanted to play, instead of what the crowd was primed to hear, then I'm sorry, but you're a bad DJ.

Regardless of how the previous DJ played, you should always follow on from where they left off. Similar sound, similar vibe, similar feel. This way the crowd doesn't need to suddenly adjust, because it is in this suddenly adjusting that you will loose a LOT of your audience. A good DJ will have a wide range of music and know how to use it. By all means you can eventually build into the feeling that you WANT to give the crowd, but you can't start off with it. You are just one chapter in a story that goes all night, and you have to continue the plot from the previous chapter and allow the next DJ to continue the story.

Was the party indoor or outdoor? Or, more importantly, when was the party due to end? If it was an outdoor party, or any other party that goes well into the day, then you should have been playing night music. And not all night music has to be progressive, indeed, quite a lot of night music is very full-on (Absolum, Etnica, Lemurians, CPU).

To be a successful DJ you really need to know how to take your mix from one place to another. If your mixes move, then you'll have no problem picking up from where the previous DJ left, and taking the crowd even higher, or even deeper, as is needed.

altough you're waaaay more expirienced than me in this, i have to disagree.
imho, the dj should plat HIS style and be true to his musical taste. and not only play what the crowd wants him to. but the dj has to feel the enegry from the crowd and give them something to keep that energy, but as i said, acording to his personal taste.

and btw, for me, you can play what ever music you want in any time of the party as long as it's good.
