Ehmm... Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing!

I respect your opinion, though for me the despiritualisation of trance, be it eastern or western influences, is a real pity. How does it enrich anyone?
Especially in these times of global balagan, a return to some sort of uniting higher mission (to avoid the term spirituality), a sense that trance is more than the sum of its musical parts, would be very welcome.

I think the Indian culture gave a lot to trance in the meaning of accepting others as they are, no show off. BUT, as trance music lovers grew, it has become a fashion to do show off. Show off how "related" you are - by the way ppl talk for example. Saying "boom" after every sentence.
Some people try to dress as more indian as they can get, just to show off.

          Majority is never right!

Of course it has to do with the origins of the scene. Somebody once asked me «What if hindus start something similar using christian symbols? How would you feel if you saw t-shirts with the image of Christ or the virgin Mary in wallhangings at a party?» I think there's no better way to pay tribute to these prophets or gods than to feel happy, respecting mother nature, feeling free to dance and comunicate with our brothers and sisters. I don't think "They" would be pissed.
In fact I believe that some ppl who go to partys are closer to Gods than ppl who go to church every sunday.

By the way, isn't Shiva the God of dance?

You do not need religion or a "deeper meaning" to connect !

The music is the factor that will make people connect.

You tend to forget that it was not the indian god symbold and spirituality that connected people in teh good old days "93 - 97" but a lot of drug taking such as ecstacy..... Today people tend to do much more drug such as coke and that's why the whole peace love and unity has gone awayf rom our scene..... It's quite simple :-9

From the super set: {trance, drugs, religion}
There are 4 sub-sets that are relevant for this forum:
{trance, drugs, religion}
{trance, drugs}
{trance, religion}
{trance}
Tell me your sub-set and I'll tell you your reply to this thread.

boom babas,

very mixed comments here

i thought we're a community and mite be having very similar views about this topic atleast

ok now one more point

the symbolism of indian gods, ganesh, shiva...are now just limited and cut down to painting them on backdrops and using them as decoration material.

remember shiva is god, he resides in your soul, if u want to see him close your eyes and think about him and u can feel His presence

another point ppl many times refer to "shiva the destroyer". wrong again! Shiva is destroyer of evil not a perpetuater of evil! and plzz he aint no druggie either..he was a god who himself meditated for years to the end. Only one vulnerability of shiva is shown in the scriptures and thats his short temper. it goes like "disturb him at his meditation..boom ure burnt alive" but people had other ways to communicate with the meditating god..they meditate about him and win his affection and love...lol why am i preaching

shutup sidddd

ok ok

It's a very good question - why are Hindu religious symbols part of trance fashion? My girlfriend brought me a lovely orange Ganesha t-shirt back from a trip to Thailand ("My girlfriend went to Thailand and all I got was this crummy t-shirt...."). Anyway, I do wear it to parties (and everywhere else) though I'm not Hindu and don't really know anything about Ganesha (though I do now that I just did a search: http://www.compulink.co.uk/~ganesh/ganesha.htm) So, yes for me itfs mostly fashion (and a free t-shirt!). But it does represent something more to me.

I think Hindu symbols represent a worldview that is very different from the one presented by modern materialistic science that dominates Western thinking and that I largely grew up with. The exact details of Hinduism are not as important to me as the notion that there is gmore to reality than (most people) have ever confrontedh. Whether through trance dance, meditation, drugs or other techniques of connecting with that gmoreh, people can experience what is at the core of the great ancient mystical traditions and modern religions.

I too have described myself as atheist or agnostic in the past. However, after many direct experiences of a unifying principle (call it God, Brahman, or whatever), I canft deny that there is something beyond matter and energy (including music) that connects us all. In this way, all spiritual symbols are relevant to me and I imagine also to many other trancers.

well,,
trance was a culture that originated in INDIA- when i say originated , i mean various ideas from the western travellers & the religous/spiritual ideas of the indian culture were blended together,.
& the idea of hindu gods, afaik, hinduism preaches abt peace, meditation, life beyond death, karma, life cycle etc. . .
& SHIVA aka NATRAJA aka MAHADEVA - they are the GODS OF DANCE in india (the dance of shiva), [classical dancers in india are honoured with MONUMENTS THAT DEPICT GOD SHIVA DANCING] , , that got related to trance with the idea that you get real high when u listen to trance & start dancing, feeling one with urself,, trance-dance!!

& ohm is a symbol for peace and energy ( that supernatural energy which we all feel present in the universe,)
it wasnt STOLEN from the indian culture, if u think OHM was STOLEN bcos it originated in india, then mayb you could also see the other side and say that DIGITAL MUSIC was STOLEN from the west.
accept it taht a new culture evolved from 2 diff cultures. & nothing is stolen, its shared & it blended into one.

boom shankar means having or offering a smoke dedicated to shiva, (thats what i;ve heard)

i duno how drugs got into the scene,, but tellme one genre of music where the drug scene is ABSENT!

mayb this could help, http://mayank02.tripod.com/istrance.htm

these are my ideas abt the TRANCE CULTURE & HINDI GODS etc,..
correct me if i am wrong!!

it's part of the great trance culture
the connection with indian gods, maybe it's not so connected (maybe it is, with shanti goa trance etc....)

it's like you ask what long hair has to do with metal bands           u can find "Anything U Want" using the search...

IMO (always respecting and learning with others opinion):
There are no Gods, there is just the endless now.
Psytrance is related to lots of symbols (like ohm) and words (like Shiva, Boom Shankar) and people will always use these words and symbols with other meanings, since they don´t know the true meaning (and don´t know where to find this meaning).
What to do if in the middle of a music there is: Boom Shankar?
Anyway, psytrance, for having no lyrics, is much more universal and introspective than most music styles.
For sure I respect the roots of psytrance culture, but we are evolving from an local phenomenal to a worldwide menace.
I would like to hear some songs about the Bhagavad Gita...
Everything is changing around...
Respect!
          .
...Be gentle with the earth...
...Dance like nobody's watching...

...I don't mind not going to Heaven, as long as they've got Coffee in Hell...
