I have been to many gigs around and twisted to the wicked tunes played by many top dj's.

Now what exactly they do manning the mixer and CD players!

I dont even know a hook about it?

Just wanna clarify few things:

@ - The DJ plays files from the artists?

# - The DJ mixes two or three tracks in one play?

& - The DJ smartly jumps from one track to the other

* - Simply loops tracks

Sounds strange asking such childly questions, but an insight wud help.

A DJ is a Disc Jockey = a person who playes music to other people. You got good DJ's, Skilled DJ's, Bad DJ's, and Bad Dj's that just play genius music aka (lets say) Goa Gil. And you got DJ spinners like DJ Shadow and the crew from Ninja Tunes that just masturbates with the decks. Simply the best DJ's out there, but a DJ plays music.

DJ = A person who introduces and plays recorded popular music on radio or at a disco.
haha

I'm just stating the abviouse and simple here, so I'll go and take a leek now.

most full on psytrance dj's play with 2 decks and do a mix of maybe a minute.... sometimes less... they dont loop tracks, they dont compose anything on the spot, they dont twaek the tracks other then volume, fade (quickfade), some use the jet/zip/wah effects on the cdjs... (most dont).
progressive dj's have a bit more freedom since the tracks are "emptier".... dj's mix sometimes 3 tracks at a time.. still usualyl 2 is the case - just longer mixes.

there are also what i call "human jukeboxes" or "human winamp players" these are the persons who for some reason are playing music but are not dj's. they have mastered the art of making fade in/out of track thus breaking the energy and producing poor ambient mixes... they are usually affiliated with the party org in some way, otherwise someone better (who can mix) would be playing.

Human Jukebox, hehe, good word, and I was one of them. When I worked as a DJ in Greece some years ago, I had to play/mix everything from Britney Spears, Scooter, Green Day, euro-trance/dance to rap and R&B. I hated 95% of the music I played. But I was good, not as a DJ with skills and such, but playing what the sheep flock wanted to hear, I had charisma and a good vibe that the "flock" crowd got "into". I was a damn good fader I tell you!! I even remember one night, I was realy sick of something. I puked and I pushed play and faded the tracks for hours. It even got so bad I had to leave the place and spend 30 minutes alone in the back while a compilation was running with some bad eoru-dance tracks.. Now doing all of that at one time. Shure takes some skills, right? (the booth was tall, so the crowd didnt see me puke, exept a few that climbed up that I had to knock down.) .. And it was a good triel for me (the whole first experience thingy), even though I was a "fake" DJ that could even take a compilation, and let it run for a couple of tracks, and then fade/mix into something else. haha. Luckely, things have changed, and will change even more as soon as I get my decks.

hehe, (memories) I remember when the night was ending and all of the tourists where drunk out of their mind, I could sneek in some wicked Goa tunes. Then I tried to mix and do a real job, and you know what? Each time I made a perfect mix and everything seemed "pro". I was in ecxtecy. It felt great to do a real DJ job with "real" music that I my self could enjoy. To bad I was one of the only ones getting a big kick out of the psy. Dumb drunk people getting naked and climbing up in my DJ booth. Damn those girls letting me ..... Ah, you know that Strip/Joke above? I had that "DJ power". It was fun, but it was funnier while bartending. Then I could do some nasty shit .. lol ..hrm. offtopic

Umm.. What was the topic again?

Dj Do a lot of things

but for give a good dj set he should connect to the ppl on the dancefloor he must be with full energy and good vibes thats the openning.
sure he must know how 2 mix 2 tracks 3 its not matter bit mix its thing that dj must know if he know to play with the mixe's and do tricks back to other tack and then again move the other 1 and a lot of tricks that on good sound will smack the ppl brain's.

aNd sure he must play good music (i prefer 2 play what i like and not music that working well on the dancefloor and me dont like it dj must play his music taste that he liked.)
for sure following tracks 1 by 1 with good story and connection between the tracks very important.

for sure another 1 and last one,the music have to be in good quality thats mean original cd's or master waves that he got from artist's.

no mp3 and shiitty quality.

thats the important points to make the crowd happy digging and enjoying from the trance music that we got from god.

Booom On You freaks.           Happy Happy,Joy Joy.

sorry for going offtopic but:

i agree with surrender almost till the end, coz in his last saying "otherwise someone better (who can mix) would be playing" he's is missing a quite important point (just like all the people that at the party complain about the human jukebox) : most of times if it wasn't for the (one or more)human jukebox helping the organization, there won't be no party at all, this is a classic exemple of consumistic mentality: everybody wants to come and get (eventually paying), but noone wants to help out and deserve something...get my point?

actually if i had to org an event i would first give a chance to DJ to all the people that helped out, and after that i would look for the pro DJ (actually he/she also pretends money...), coz at the end the biggest contribution to the realitation of the party came from human jukeboxes and not from the proDJ and the amazing musical journey that he eventually set up.

i still prefer listenning to a humanjukebox in a real party than listening a perfect mix from astrix or logic bomb on my sofa at home: reality is about compromises

...so i prefer ending your saying in a different way "..., otherwise there wouldn't be no party at all or the entry would cost twice."

back to topic : the DJ trances and dances, all the DJ'ing activity should keep him the less far posiible from dancing and trancing with the crowd, this way the dj can feel the sound/mix from the floor side and know what the crowd needs

bye

I think the top preference should always to whoever is the best musically. If the person who put on the party doesn't know how to DJ and just wants to do it for the ego, he or she should play in the opening or closing slot - because the event is about the music and the vibe, not about self-promotion of people who put it on.

          ..it's just another party..

I'm still with Surrender on this. If you do organize parties you have the opportunity to borrow some decks and a mixer for a couple of nights and learn how to beat mix. It's quite basic, if you can dance to a beat you should also be able to beatmix.
I'm not too happy about seeing "Dj HumanWinamp".

i think zafer is talking about a real trance party, out in nature without the goal of making profits.... thats the part i didnt see and therefore i made a generalization.... i think in those cases putting someone like that at the start is ok.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

I agree. But it's not hard to learn how to beatmix, and besides, there is always another person who's willing to play for free who can beatmix.           ________________________
