at our festival i had a couple djs who played fullon at the chillout stage, one at 11pm, one at 5am. i received several complaints about both of them, but they are both my friends and i dont want to exclude them from future events. several people sleeping were woken, and it generally just makes me feel funny. its a chillout stage?! if we wanted you to play trance we would have booked you for the mainstage , jeez!
any suggestions from someone who has dealt with this would be great.

never dealt with it before, but my 2 cents anyways..
-----

i like my chillout with beats...up to 125bpmish.....but not 'full-on' (whatever that means nowadays)

I would deal with it, just like I would deal with any other "bad" DJ... train wreckers, level clippers,
shoddy sounding mp3 spinners - and talk to them about it kindly...

or making a written statement on the chillout schedule "Tranquility Stage : For Downtempo Explorations Under 120bpm" should work wonders...

this should work, just like writing the DJ times on the schedule does wonders for DJs arguing among themselves about who's gonna play the peak slot - it's on typed paper, and people seem to respect it.

just my 2 cents.

Restricting the BPM isn't the way to do it.

For instance, just off the top of my head I know that Shpongle's "Monster Hit" is roughly 160bpm (at least at the beginning) but I would consider it a chillout track. There are tons of chillout tracks that I've heard above 120.

just tell them to play chill and learn to booked only chill out d.j to the chill out stage.
when you book artist you speak with him on that--i think that it is the right way to do...if his style not fit you just don't book him...
wish you the best in the future

How would you deal with a DJ who chose to play 130 BPM house at the peak of a full-on party (3-5 AM or so)?

Common man, this is silly (not you, only the issue) - I must tell you that by booking your friend just because they are your friends and not because they are good DJs for the required style you strayed from the professional path, and that's a sickness that is too wide spread in the psy-trance 'underground' scene: DJs get booked because of their connections, not because of their skills or music, resulting in either shitty music/technique (on the less bad side) or even cases like you described here (on the worst side).

2 things:
1. When you plan your lineup, make sure you know the material of each DJ - dont book someone without knowing (roughly) what he playes - this also effects on the whole linup (placing a progressive DJ after a full on one, for example)
2. You are the stage manager - you must act like one and disregard any favoritizm, even to your friends. I'm sure that people paid good money for this event and probably dont care much for your relations with the DJ. When performing, you perform for a crowd, not for your ego, and he/she should know that. And you as stage manager need to make sure of that.

all the best in future productions,
A

yes very good suggestions....
i booked both djs because i had heard them play many good chill sets in the past. not just because they were friends.
i think they were both upset they didnt get to play on the mainstage
and by fullon i mean azax syndrom, dark heavy slammers like that. one of the djs actually joined in with another group of djs and they gave him a chance to play during thier set also and they all seemed to be enjoying it... but it was most certainly not chillout.
now, apparently there were people dancing, but thats not the point, the point is that there were kids sleeping in the campground across from the chillout, and the dj before and after this timeslot were playing proper chillout. i have expressed my distaste for the lack of sticking to the format and that they would not be booked for next time around because of this problem. they both just told me to relax and that they were playing what they felt was right.
so it comes down to me, the organizer, wanting to create a completely chillout lineup, and in the future i will be booking people who wouldnt ever think of playing such tunes at a chill stage. what a nerve.
and while i organized the lineup of the chillstage, i was also involved in the production of the mainstage and left the operation of the chillstage to the chillstage djs and sound crew.
there seems to be a bunch of people who think that since it is a festival, anything goes?!
thanks for the feedback.

the best thing about this problem is that it was the only problem we had at the festival, not too bad!

I reckon you could get them so stoned they cant remember how to beatmatch. (Assuming they do that of course).

If that fails, get a group of people to stand in front of them with there hands in their ears for a bit....

You know what,
you should have secret 'signs' language with every DJ...

stroking the ear = raise volume
stroking 2 ears = lower the volume!
stroking the head = wtf are you playing?
stroking legs = raise bpm
hands up = i give up do whatever you want           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

The very name Ambient means that it suits it's surroundings, it really annoys me when people play inappropriate music in chill areas and it's not about bpm, I could play you some totally chilled tunes that are 130 + bpm. But if it's your festival, you should shoulder a bit of the blame ,as the promoters surely should be booking dj's because they are good at what they do. You owe that to the people who've paid good money to come to your event.

well ive talked with both of them and they both apparently got "requests" to play trance. its not my fault they decided to do so... i booked them because they are good chill djs, but they are weak to not refuse to play trance when asked to do so by tweaking fans.
i will not take the blame, heh.
they have both been appropriately scolded and will be at the very absolute bottom of the list when it comes to booking djs for next year....
