its not just about them being cool to collect
mixing using vinyls is so much nicer than using cds
cds skip, you cant scratch with them, or do spinbacks or anything at all well
with vinyl you can just dump the needle on them at any pioint you want, with cds you have to forward, rewind
and with vinyl, u get your hands on for adjusting tempo or jogging them in to sync
its a lot more fun to use

OK, lets make some order here.
CDs quality is THE SAME as vinils - it all depends on the source quality. If the source is in digital quality then no one of us can hear the difference - its just too delicate, and don't tell me that U can, its bull.

Secondly - axept for scratching there's nothing CDJs can't match for turntables, and they're far easier to manipulate. I don't waste half a track just finding the entry point and losing it again - it's all cued.

Third - it all depends on the DJ - you can choose a simple beatmix or actualy play with the mixer, but with vinils you must be 'hands-on' all the time. I know some of us (borris, where art thou?) like this "DJ-martyr" attitude, but I like to enjoy my sets on the side.

First of all Hi Everyone, I'm back from Zambia!!!!
about the festival I'll do a different topic in the parties.
as to the vinyl debate.
I have quite alot of stuff that never came out on CD (Example: Analog Pussy - Audio Santo). I like to play it from the original media. also at the last Moksha (where I played) I had 2 completly fucked up jemini CD's (and don't even think about calling them CDJ's) BUT I had 2 SL1210 Techniks so it was much easier for me to spin vinyl there. also it's some part of Attitude and profesionality to work with CD's and of course I'm in favour of Full hands on while Djing approach. I come to DJ, to Create a new set out of existing stuff. I come to work not to dance. I can dance to other people's music. and I'm still enjoying myself very much while being busy all the time at the mixer and decks.
all well, Boris.

oh man, do you have any idea how many parties I've been to where the stupid needle was broken/missing/forgotten at home? or when the ppl had no clue that a turntable has a Ground connection as well?
turntables, like CDs can get fucked boris.
I was 'playing' on Pioneer CDJs before, but only when I got to practice on Dennon DJ CDs (I wont call'em CDJs), I considered myself a DJ, because they forced me to actualy make an effort in finding the cue point and synchronizing between traxx. CDJs are so simple that u can spend 10 minutes and you're spining.

yeah they do generally use vinyl more in the uk, but the last few parties i've been to they've been using CD, kinda scary. anyway yeah i prefer vinyl, HANDS ON is the main reason, it's better for more creative mixing. i think alot of people are using CDs because it's so much cheaper, to just downloading tunes off the internet and copying from friends etc. but i respect a dj more for using vinyl. it has a more serious and loyal feeling to it.

i find myself being most impressed by djs that use both vinyl & cds. both formats have their pros & cons, but i think a dj that can beat-match using any format is worthy ov respect for their versatility.
i have been mixing with vinyl since 1995 and treat my turntables like they are my own children, but more recently i have been thinking ov adding some cdj's to my set-up. i like vinyls because they have an analogue feel and because they are more 'hands-on' (which is important for long beat-matched transitions), and new vinyl smells absolutely wonderful when you first pull it out from its sleeve (like a fine wine). at thee same time however cds are lighter, more durable, can be listened to anywhere, and can hold more music for a cheaper price.
i think vinyl and cds should be used TOGETHER...

cds + vinyl is the best solution, definatly. get the best of both worlds.

but i think vinyl is better to start with and use as a primary sound source. its more fun.

all you digital brains..
forgot that on a vinyl you can also SEE the music!!
abaot way ppl use cdj
and not t.t-
well i think it is also to do
with beeing lazy ,and if you are talking abaot
nature partyes , i have a box fool of vinyls
that got a litell , twested to say the least..
from the sun ..
and ther is nothing like vinyls to spin ,
bceuse you can actually spin + you have the effect
sound of  the niddel free of churge wich i love!
i think that today everybody can mix on a cdj , like Borris said it takes a few huers to play with it and you are a dj, if you can do it with the turn table or maby 3 than you can call yourself a dj and the sound that feals like it is imbracing you and not kiking you wich sometims this digital sound can do
it is also easear on ppl with bad back... (the cdj i mean ..)
p.s
borris , dont you think that the Kinetic is like cdj and the xr 600 r is like a turn table ?
the sound..
i love thouse vinyls ... thay have this elegancy abaot them
wich cd will never have .
i dont think it is recomended to work with cd and vinyl
sometims the difference is to much wen you mix them together.. Dat & turn table

I'd say The kinetic's are CDJ's but the SL1200 are Enfields.
and no DAT are in no way recomended, you can't mix with them. Use vinyl with a little CD in it (and if you know your sound then you can allways mix the two together).
And yes, see the music, know where your breaks are. But a very nice feature on the CDJ 500 is the looper. on the other hand I have 3 records with over 200 loops that can lay endlessly. (closed loops on vinyl).
All well, Boris.
