yes... the key is connecting directly with the people who like your music...

playing live is the best way to do this

piracy hits retail... who then stock only the commercial cd's they know will sell themselves, which means less sales for labels, which drives down compilation advances, which means less $ reward to the artists for their time and work...

a good music store is like a good bookshop - something that adds value and interest to a community. music stores, alas, are becoming increasingly rare thesedays.

just a litle info:

after traveling a lot around europe with my small stock of cds.

sell a cd at a good price,
like 15 €
is all most impossible, cause, the prices on internet shop are very low (that good & bad in the same time)

in swiss we are use to pay for a cd direct from an artist, 20€

but, i do not sell my/our cds in europe more than 12€
(into a party direct to the person)
sometime is 10€

off course, into less "moneypower" countrys this prices are to high.

so:
that my list of price for several countrys

Swiss: 15€
France: 12 €
Italy: 10€
Macedonia: 8€ (for new rel.) 5€ (for older rel.)
Germany: 12€ (but more around 10€)
Uk: 7 or 8 pounds
Greece: 10€ (very hard to get better, full piracy here) people have to small money for buy originals.
Portugal: 10€
Ireland: 12€

for artists - make sure you play live as much as you can, and always travel with a box full of your cd's. people will usually get their $ out if they know it is going straight to you.

It always feels good to buy a cd directly from the artist.

It's unfortunate that more artists don't facilitate this at festivals...

you see it a lot more here... whereas in europe it is sometimes considered a little over-humbling for an artist to be hawking copies of their own cd...

the fact is that you end up giving away for free most of it...           "There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain will never improve, and that's here." Aldus
