Each release from the Liquid Sound Design crew is something special to expect. And it is something great nowadays, to be lucky enough to know about them and being able to dig their great Music. I believe it.. I think the very first chilled record from dragonfly I've experienced was Mana Medicine or Kumba Mela Experiments (was close) .. Yes i've discovered the magic realm of Chill Out quite late, and L.S.D.'s music has been and will remain a vibration that changed my way of seing things, and yalla : my life... Simply.
No i'm not crawling.. many other labels are also exciting of course.. But it's been like a... declic !

This release, referenced BFLCD70, released today (Februar 9th) and called Wider Horizons, is about celebrating the genesis of Liquid Sound Design, 5 years ago, under the wing of Dragonfly, and consists in a serie of remixes by L.S.D.'s tenors and guest artists.. A single listening of the records is enough to imagine that they have all played the game with excitement and passion.

Here's the tracklisting..

01. TripSwitch ::: Silver (Ott Remix)
02. Drum Druid ::: Last Summer Dub (Abakus Remix)
03. Nada ::: Manakhana (Youth Remix)
04. United States of Love ::: Tiger Moon (Vatos Locos Remix)
05. Kumba Mela Experiments ::: Elephant Trax (VibraSphere Remix)
06. Ott ::: Escape from Tulse Hell (TripSwitch Remix)
07. Nada ::: EarthGarden (Abakus Remix)

And now a few emotions and thoughts I've had after my firsts listenings of this great record :

Ott is responsible of the opening and starts his remix with the piano that one can recall from the original "Silver" track, featured on VA Butterfly Dawn. He adds a smooth but heavy bass line drive that gives to this remix a new dimension and an Elektro beat. Later, tiny aquatic sounds, light percussions and flute melodies will create the very nice atmosphere of this remix. After a while (3 minutes), Ott brings a superb twisted melody, combined with full-fx & echo chants, and dynamised by some short "transposed" (hope the translation is correct..) passages. This trick made me think about the flow that was in TimesHard's "Cosmic Carrot" back to the Planet Dog days.. In the end, the whole is punctuated by light accoustic guitar chords and finally shrouded in an aerial wave. A Superb track ! Ott's imagination seems to be without limits... Bravo once again.

"Last Summer Dub" is an undeniable track in the backrooms and chill outs and is featured on VA Elucidations. Abakus chosed to create a quite similar atmosphere but placed a beat much more broken. The way it is launched is quite good, and it is combined with a bass line drive quite groOvey and sophisticated. Abakus draws a subtle, aerial and somehow hypnotic ambiance thanks to beautiful tiny sounds, some of them sounding quite old school. Which really doesn't bore me especially in the chilled beats realm. The amazing vocoder sample of the original track is at the rendez-vous, but not overused. Another good point for this very nice track.

"Manakhana" was already an easily danceable track on VA Butterfly Dawn thanks to a groOvey flow. And yet Youth brings his unique vibration, opening the track with a sustained beat. Great hihats, massive bass line drive and light percussions complete the promizing foretaste of the remix. The flow is definitaly set up after a (very) short break. It's just great ! With light stretched and twisted sounds punctuated by this mind-teasing "triangle" hit, the ambiance is very nice and enlighted by scattered full fx chants. A long spoken words sample raise the dramatic aspect of the track, concluded with a short break. Then Youth is having fun with his Bass guitar, combining his delirium with a little touch of accoustic guitar.. It's superb.

United States of Love aka Youth's "Tiger Moon" is an outstanding track featured on VA Youth in Dub... and the difficult task of remixing it has been experienced by the great trans-boarders trio Vatos Locos... And they opened their remix in a superb way... I just love it ! All in crescendo with strange tiny sounds, aerial wave in the background... the genesis of the amazing bass line drive, and latin guitar chords.... a break.. and then : total happiness !! Ba Da Boom.. an amazing flow, very sustained, with this out of time guitar giving a Ska (due to the fast beat lol) ambiance.. The whole is quite complex but without becoming heavy... There's a suble contrast between these phat rythmics and the tiny melodies. It's resolutely made to dance.. and I just love it. Should one expect more chilled creations by the trio ?? Let's hope so..

Now we have a surprising but very tempting combo... Kumba Mela Experiments meet VibraSphere... I don't know how the mariages tracks <> artists were decided.. But this one was a great idea. The introduction is quite long with a declination of sounds and melodies suited to the original track. And suddenly one of the great vocoder samples lauches a superb Big Beat.. quite slow and heavy thanks to a sub bass line drive. It gives a totally new dimension to this track. The whole is illustrated with a nice loop of pinched strings (translation hazardous.. sorry).. The sitar is very light in the background as the so precious melodies of the original track follow one another... Then, after a beatless passage, the track reaches a more atmospheric dimension... contrasting with what its name could let one imagine. And the voice of Brother Culture (I believe ?) put a stop to this superb piece of Music.

"Escape From Tulse Hell", featured on Ott's album.. was previously released by the LSD crew on the great VA Mana Medicine. Yet the roles are inversed and it is TripSwitch's turn to remix a track by Ott. The opening is beatless, spacey but intense.. filled with a light piano line.. and these kind of mouth organ sounds.. a very dubby passage follows with a sublime bass line drive in its simplicity. Then a slow and phat tribal beat complete the already great atmosphere of the remix. Light piano lines here and there, combined with sounds from "somewhere else" .. Roots natty voices contrasting the perfect way with this.. before the track takes off with aerial waves.. and your mind takes off with it.. A track, superb in its genre (I mean including piano) to be played late in a chilled set, I think..

Abakus appears one more time and this already great compilation and concludes it. He takes care of Nada's "Earthgarden" track featured on VA Butterfly Dawn. The amateurs should get ready for a very promizing album expected next spring, because this "conclusion" is a very beautiful smooth dubbey illustrated with a lot of elements that have already decorated the compilation : nice bass line drive, light percussions, full fx chants and piano touches.. The atmosphere is very peacefull and highly chilling out. And it stands at the right place on the tracklisting.
Very nice conclusion, remix of the opening track of ButterFly Dawn.. Shall we see another wink ? I dunno but the anecdote is funny.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well that's it

Once again one have an amazing piece of Music gathered on this release and it is a true pleasure to listen to the whole stuff.. Many (not to say all) of these tracks will bring their special atmospheres and enlight a chilled set/home-listening moment. Bravo to all the artists involved, as seeds (original tracks) or as fruits (remixes) of the fantastic tree that Wider Horizons embodies..

Thanx for reading, enjoy this comp !!
