Dissolving Clouds
Interchill (Canada)

Fuck. I couldn’t normally start a review of a chill album with a profanity, but this being interchill, I can fucking say what I fucking well fucking want to. This folks, is the mutt’s nuts, the cat’s whiskers, the bee’s knees, the skazi’s dentist’s tragic and accidental slip of the hand with a drill. Eat Static open with Ufo Over, a great bit of spacey dub with scifi samples in abundance, glitchy cornering on the drums and a seriously deep sound running all the way through it. Gaudi Vs Tripswitch’s Subdown is nothing short of orgasmic, as you’d probably expect from these two producers on the musical case together. It’s incredibly chilled, and downright pleasant music basically – emotive, reflective, intelligent and groovy all at once. I never quite got on with Kaya Project, and From Raag To Ragga fits in with their sound and vibe which I know everyone else likes except me. It’s unquestionably organic, and employs plenty of world music influences; but I for one prefer my chill to be just chilled, and not like a Rough Guide to majority world music. Once again I know I’m in the minority, but just as you’re trying to hit me with a frying pan, Alex Theory’s Voodoo Dub starts and it’s a masterpiece. End of. It coasts and breezes along like an old friend, and the production is so damn relaxed and mellow, you think your CD player’s about to fall asleep. Goes well with a sunset, as does Liquid Stranger’s Liquid Stranger On The Run, a wonderfully spacey bit of reggae’d-up chillage, sounding a little like a less hyperactive (and more musical) Dreadzone, with a stoned, slightly edgy groove and a haunting flute loop that makes me want to listen to that old Beastie Boys track, whatever it was called. Legion Of Green Men’s Blowbaq is wonderful – glitchy, farty sounds built into a sort-of-drum-n-bass setup, with unbelievable groove. Things then take a turn for the stellar with Eiji’s Digimunk – which you can tell from the very beginning is going to be a very special tune. A clean, chorused guitar kicks off and is accompanied by a warm bass. Then a chick sings breathlessly, over an upbeat reggae groove, and plenty of sounds come in to join the party – some smooth, some cheeky, all top notch. This is one of the best single chill tracks I think I’ve heard since Ott’s material first started to come to light. The deep and foreboding atmosphere of Peyote Sound System’s Aqua Dub makes a nice change before Mauxuam’s Ulezak – which is farken awesome. It sounds a little like Ott in places… do I stick my neck out here and suggest that he might have something to do with this project? There’s definitely snickers of him in there, and come to mention it I can smell Posford too. How’s that for starting a rumour. How’s that for starting a rumour. It’s untrue but you read it here first. Anyway it’s awesome this, deeper than Britney’s prayer for the victims of the hurricaine, it flows into itself. It keeps on coming with Its Not Buddha from Erik The Viking Vs Odo, a tongue-in-cheek fancy-a-raag skit with a great groove to it and a truly transporting vibe. Finally, Lunchbox bring the album to a fuddly, cuddly end with the gloriously psychedelic but bit-too-short Jellyfish Roll, a timestretched wonderland of reggae, old psychedelia, free jazz and dub. Right on. They seriously don’t come much better than this folks. Dissolving Clouds knocks spots off the competition, hides its car keys and makes obscene phone calls to its younger sister in the middle of the night. Oodles of respect and love for a CD I’m going to be addicted to for a long time yet.

I'm in full agreement with the above review, but am compelled to give my take. Got my copy yesterday and it's my fave chill comp for quite some time.

Eat Static: "UFO over trenchtown" Good technical effects throughout the track, plus sci-fi movie type UFO samples, and a somewhat reggaefied rhythm. I'm digging it for sure, it really does make me imagine a cheesy UFO film set in Jamaica. I plan to get goofy and mix in some old reggae vocals, perhaps saying "goodness gracious" after the sci-fi samples to exaggerate this effect.

Gaudi vs. Tripswitch: "Subdown" Nice! I feel like this track really brings out the best of both worlds. It has a certain energy and intensity that I didn't find in the tripswitch album, which was a little too smooth for my taste. On the other hand, the psychedelic electronic effects and melodies are much more prominent here than in Gaudi's more organic material, where such electronic effects and melodies are more sparse/subtle.

Kaya Project: "From Raag to Ragga" I guess Psyreviews and myself happen to be two of the few people not that into Kaya Project. I have no complaints about this track, in fact it's quite beautiful-it just doesn't grab me.

Alex Theory: "Voodoo Dub" Yes! The track starts off with some classic reggae style echoing chords. Something about the sounds of the basic parts, the tempo, and the interplay between these chords and the percussive elements really captures the Jamaican reggae sound and translates into our time and place. (place being worldwide psytrance temporary autonomous zones ) Then when the music drops out except the atmopsheric layering and the female vocal (no lyrics, as I prefer) comes in...wow! As psyreviews noted, a good sunset tune. Hearing this part of the track as the sun goes down would be very intense, despite the overall mellowness of the track. The second time this part comes in, there is much energy in the drum riff and music immediately following it. Mellow, but not the kind of chill you throw on to accompany your journey into sleep. Good effects once again.

Liquid Stranger: "Liquid Stranger on the Run" Nice atmopsherics throughout this reggaefied tune that once again really translates the old Jamaican spirit. The melody is very pretty and somewhat playful and the tempo is nice and danceable. Like Voodoo Dub, it is mellow, but nevertheless has a nice energy to it. The vocals work perfectly with the vibe of the track, in the same sense as the hip-hop in Damage's "Predator." Hopefully no hardcore chillout people will mind this comparison with Damage.

Legion of Green Men: "Blowbaq" Damn, this is funky! I dig the horn riff, and breaks. Kinda reminds me of the Lionrock song they used in Go with the prince buster sample. Good for home listening, but I could get up and dance like a loon to this one if I was so inclinded. Not totally sure if I like its placement in this comp though. Time will have to tell.

Eiji: "Digimunk" Like Psyreviews (hopefully this review isn't too similar to be rendered pointless) I was pretty blown away by this track. The most chill of the really reggafied tracks on the disc, this belongs on those chill CDs like Thailand Sunsets, etc., if it wasn't too good for 'em on account of the nice psychedelic effects making things interesting instead of boring! Definitely my song of choice if I was dj'ing on a beautiful beach as the sun went down. This song will cradle you in it's arms like a newborn babe and convince you that everything will be allright and all is well with the world. It will envelope your being with its dubby goodness. Can't really say I like the last second, or maybe half second-the effects leading up to the end work quite well for me, but the end itself is very abrupt and I can't find any method in the madness. Oh well, who cares?

Peyote Dub System: "Aqua Dub"-things get into a slower and heavier groove with this one. Although there is heavy bass and in some parts the reggae rhythm on the 2s and 4s, the sound of the 2s and 4s and interaction with the bass doesn't give me the Jamaican vibe. It's more akin to the hypnotic dub sounds of the Liquid Sound Design compilation Dr. Alex Paterson's Voyage into Paradise. I'm enjoying the soundscape at the end. Good stuff.

Mauxuam: "Ulezak" Dubby in the same sense as Aqua Dub, we get more hypnotic sounds and effects. This one would be a nice soundtrack for some mental journeying, no doubt. Although every track on this comp is quite good technically, this one stood out a little more to me on the technical merits. The layering brings in just the right atmosphere at just the right time, and I image that the vocal sample (vaguely reminiscent of Juno Reactor's guttural sounds) is psychedelic by anyone's standards.

Erik the Viking vs. Odo: "It's not the Buddha" We're off to a good start as I like the name. Things start off sounding like we're in for some slow world music like stuff with nice euphoric layering and an unobtrusive drum part. The euphoric layering doesn't seem to quite match up in tones with the lead part, creating a very interesting effect on my ear that I am really enjoying. The vocals come in and work with the drums to make things more energized, but the other elements maintain the chill vibe. Later in the track a tabla or something (forgive my ignorance) ratches up the energy again, during the last portion of the track I'm ready to do a hypnotized pseudo-tribal dance around a communal fire deep in the woods somewhere, and that is a good thing!

Lunchbox: "Jellyfish Roll" Hey, this is a quirky little oddball track. If I had to describe it in one word, I would say "cute!" Totally trippy, but relaxing. I see some sort of weird 60's psychedelic lounge scene going on. I really love the last minute when the vocals come in and there's a bit of trippy dub and trippy jazz. There are some other lunchbox tracks here:
http://www.theagriculture.com/lunchbox.html#

so obviously, I dug the hell out of this shit. You might as well.

Interchill Records in Canada keeps pushing out high quality chill out music, with one masterpiece after the other. They usually have a lot of unknown names on their compilations, mixed with some big stars, and they sure knows how to pick out the right tracks for their chilled journeys. Here they are out with another compilation, compiled by Andrew Ross Collins and Nick Edell.

Dissolving Clouds (Interchill Records) 2005 (ICHILLCD020)

1. Eat Static – UFO Over Trenchtown
2. Gaudi vs. Tripswitch – Subdown
3. Kaya Project – Raag To Ragga
4. Alex Theory – Voodoo Dub
5. Liquid Stranger – Liquid Stranger On The Run
6. Legion Of Green Men – Blowbaq
7. Eiji – Digimunk
8. Peyote Sound System – Aqua Dub
9. Mauxuam – Ulezak
10. erik The Viking Vs. Odo – It’s Not Buddha
11. Lunchbox – Jellyfish Roll

As usual we get a very interesting track list here, this time starting with a pioneer in the electronic music scene, Eat Static. Here with a really funny, but cool and relaxed dub track. Spaced out as usual from Eat Static. We also get some interesting collaborations here, such as Gaudi and Tripswitch. They give us a deep track, with chilling echoing effects, deep bass and mystical vibes. Nice one. Kaya Project who has released two albums on Interchill, gives us a taste of his latest album Elixir. One of the best tracks from the album in my opinion. We also get some new, fresh artists to the Interchill family, such as Alex Theory who brings us right to India with Indian vocals and tabla rhythms. My favourite track on this compilation, including a vocal you will sure notice and remember long after. Nice and different. Eiji is another fresh name who gives us an experimental track with organic vibes. Liquid Stranger is a side project of one half of the trance duo Necton, here with some sort of happy dub track. Legion Of Green Men has been around for a long time allready, giving us a jazzy drum ’n’ bass track. We get quite a lot of variation through the compilation, each artist with their own way of chilling us out.

As usual, Interchill give us a nice selection of carefully chosen tracks from new and established artists. I enjoyed the variation we get in this compilation, mostly going a dubby direction, but each artist with their different way of doing it, from experimental electronic sound to ethnic, organic chill.

Morpheus Music Review

STYLE
Largely downbeat fusion instrumentals. A voice with an American accent worrying over flying saucers leads us into an ethno-chilled beat with a didgeridoo type drone - and the scene is set. Dissolving Clouds makes ample use of trance-inducing recurring patterns where simple chordal structures are set rolling and then embellished with diverse musical flavours. Brief echoing melody lines are enhanced by a sprinkling of ethnic samples and there's a dub aesthetic to much of the content. Female wails and reggae influenced voices float across some rich synth work and Gaudi vs Tripswitch introduce a bass that carries that visceral depth you sometimes hear when someone in another car really pumps out the low frequencies.

MOOD
There is an earthy tone to this CD - yes, the usual psychedelic paraphernalia is present, but Dissolving Clouds has a more fervid grit than many 'chill' compilations. The range of influences fused here makes this a CD that bleeds across genres, resisting easy classification. The tone suggests smoke filled clubs on one hand and a tribal campfire atmosphere on the other.

ARTWORK
A fairly simple design for this package. Distant hills barely topping mist pools - everything of the deepest red on front and back. Inside a contour-line graphic forms the backdrop to the relevant information - all in just two colours. The usual tracklisting, credits and extensive thanks inhabit the inner booklet. Contact information likewise for the folks at Interchill can be found here.

OVERALL
Established names Gaudi, Tripswitch, Legion of Green Men, Kaya Project and Eat Static perform alongside some newer talent in what Interchill refers to as "a left-of-centre collection loosely based around the evolution of the dancehall beat." This is certainly an eclectic assemblage with lots of dub-oriented material and dense beats bound up in a mind-expanding quest for rhythm. Compiled by Andrew Ross Collins and Nick Edell, this intense album is as likely to invigorate as it is to chill.

WHO WILL LIKE THIS ALBUM
This is for downtempo fans who like something with a bit of drive and weight. A crossover collection that serves up psy, dub, ethno and jazz-influenced electronic in a gutsy manner.

Anyways, thanks for these reviews hehe I've had good times reading them..

And besides being amazed since the samples are on the web by the Eat Static track, I didn't noticed this until I've read this thread :

Thanks pete for the info, hehe
TheAgriculture is a label that is not so known in the let's call it "psy-chill-scene".. And I think it's a mistake because they're doing some really good work and release some wicked stuff..
