I gotta give respect to Akin and Catalina!
They are 2 of the best local Psytrance DJs around NYC...and I am not just saying that because Akin is one of my good friends and I have crush on Catalina.
Seriously, I would like to hear them play more sets, but unfortunatly Black and Woman DJ's don't get enough time on the decks.

on what basis do u make this racist/sexist assumption on behalf of people organizing any kind of events??? do u know something i dont? please share the horrible atrocities done to black/women dj's in our scene if you are willing to make such a bold statement.

does anyone feel that any women, blacks, or minorities are discriminated against in the sense of booking or airtimein our US community?
did anyone ever get the impression that these groups are suppressed in a non professional manner?
i know of a few:
from the east:
Akeen- Plays often in small events in NYC.
Lauryn from Boston - excellent dj who is judged on her skills and booked quite often to play those Bostonian events.
Merry from NYC - another excellent full on dj who's name is see quite often in small local events.
from the west coast (at least what i know):
Mubali - Plays quite often and is also a music producer and who's reviews are great.
Christine SC - Mayhem type dj who is for sure playing often in large events and is also producing music.
Prudence - I'm not sure what she does now, but i saw her play and she was dead on every mix.

so please tell me if you have the feeling you can prove me wrong. in my opinion dj's should be set on skill and not gender or "color" ( i cant beleive i have to use that word in 2004!!!) if the dj is a 3 legged dog who spins awesome then they will let him play and trust me, organizers will give anyone who is good air time, no if ends or buts.

now if you want to use your sexuality or race as a card, we are stepping into a whole diffrent realm where you the user are the actual discriminator in disguise of a discriminatee.
my 2 cents.

Hmmm, perhaps Pisces1979 didn't mean that the way it came out?

Anyway, Lori the Hi Fi Princess used to be in demand, AFAIK. She's a woman. So there goes the theory about discrimination against women DJs in the scene.

And how many black DJs are in the NYC scene? One? Out of more than 50 DJs. You cannot draw any conclusion whatsoever based on his hiring record. Now, if there were 5 black DJs out of 50, and none of them were getting hired, maybe one could say something about a pattern.

surrender, i said nothing about discrimination, the question is about the scene as a whole......there are not that many african americans at trance parties. this is a fact drawn not from demographics but experience. the question of women is different because there are many female trancers but few female djs. this is not aobut booking this is about socio-anthropology.

I never said Akin and Catalina were being discriminated against...
I said Quote:
"I would like to hear them play more sets, but unfortunatly Black and Woman DJ's don't get enough time on the decks. "
...I would just like to hear Akin and Catalina DJ at a BIG outdoor party this spring or summer....

Ever since Pieces1979 poured beer into the mixer in the middle of someone's set... I dont listen to him any more. (I guess I discriminate against idiotic behaviour) However, on this issue...
Akin and Cata are both friends of mine.
Akin and Catalina both need to work more on their skills irrespective of who or what they are and thats the bottom line. They are humans who need more practice at DJing and that it.
Maybe if they had their own equipment they could work on it...
I have heard them both play and played with both of them, and they have great sense of DJing, they just need to put it to more practice at home and thats the bottom line.
If you are good, and have the passion to play, you will play.

we threw a party about a month ago and many of my black friends came and had a blast, it was theyre first time to anything like that and they loved it! they said they cant wait for the next one, pieces1979 what exactly are you talking about? not meaning to be rude but this is 2004, and this is the psy scene, the most excepting group of people in the world. this isnt rock music or something like that, this is trance.

Did he pour the drink or spill it?

Anyway, I love to see women/any dj's of any race that are worthy of playing regardless.............and I think that goes the same for "most" trancers..I just think there are not enough out there to get the exposure......

Promoters intentionally not allowing them to play? That's different...."Some" promoters are different on the surface......So, you never really know what they are about, honestly. but for the most part, I don't think it's a problem.

Sorry for being a little off topic, but wow, what an asshole. There is no reason for that other than to be a big ole asshole.......And I am so against needless violence, but that is one of the few cases where I honestly feel somone needed to get their ass kicked...

You know.... I do not feel that I have ever been discriminated against in the psytrance scene! It is one of the reasons why I have been involved in this scene since 2001. It is truly accepting. And I haven't run into any type of sexism either. There are quite a few female psytrance djs here in SF, and there is never an issue about booking them or me for that matter. The only real discrimination that I have ever really seen or experience is been based upon technical ability and music style. I have been passed up for playing on certain lineups because I play hard dark scary shit. I totally understand too, because I can't 1.) expect to play every single event, and 2.) expect to be booked for a show with all full on melodic djs. It just doesn't fit the flow. And that's ok for me... So, no... I don't think there is discrimination in regards to ethinticity or sex. But I would like to see more Black psytrance djs and producers. But that's just because I feel that many people can definitely benefit from listening to this music. But if you look at electronic music as a whole and the dj culture, there are plenty of people in all walks of life that are djs or into the music... Everyone has a particular taste or is into what is around them. It's not like you can just walk into the Wherehouse and pick up an Acidance compilation...           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
