Yeap the inevitable has come, with all these releases out there the shops and the customers are tottally confused and sales are going lower all the time.
Shops are obliged to feature every new release on their selfs so they cut some cds from the 'bigger' labels to provide the audience with couple of copies from smaller labels even if the release is really bad.
Ofcourse the good thing is that more or less the people can tell a good release from a crappy one so labels who are putting a lot of effort in their products dont face serious problems with their distribution in Japan.
Even me with just 5 releases in my roster (the 5th release coming out this week) i increased my sales from my first release to the fifth release around 200% meaning that half my sales come from Japan which makes me a very very happy person.
So thank you all at ZMA,Cisco and Wakyo and most of all thanks to the Japanese crowd that seems to appreciate good stuff when they see it.
I wish things were like that also in Europe but ok who knows maybe things change soon

Interesting topic indeed here.. yet did you guys notice the overall delution of the market due to overflow of music materials and shrinking CD buying market and outlets?
please read my Mobile Business article i posted a few days ago. you guys all welcome to distribute your MUSIC, not the CD as a product, through our service of Mobile Music Download in KDDI AU EZweb Network.
No shipping costs, No distribution costs, no packaging or anything --- Zero costs to deliver the MUSIC right into people mobile phones in reasonable prices, 100% secure system.
if you ask me, in 6 month Tower records will close down here in Shibuya, and cisco will go down 50% in orders. The shift into download mobile music is so drastic here --- its just too expensive to buy CDs suddenly, and so comfortable to pickup the tracks you want, not buy full pack of tracks you like only 3 out of in double price.
just food for thoughts--

Despite not owing a label or producing tracks, my felling is that, yes, psy Cds are not selling so well in Japan. Just like said before, a lot of releases is one of the reasons. I may add that psy is not a novelty anymore and to the young crowd things work like this: they go to the parties every now and then, but when they go buying trance Cds, it´s not the psy style anymore, but the said Cyber style which sells a lot here. You may see this if you go to HMV and Tower: shelves that till sometime ago stored psy Cds now are full of Cyber. This leads to another problem: you can´t find a specific release you want if it´s not a very well known name in the scene in these big shops - no more room in the already narrow psy space. Fortunately there are some small shops where you will find these small labels release, but they are not so easy to find. Things are going underground just like in the beginning, I guess.
Peace and Love. |

dude, tower records closing down in 6 months?! you got 2 months to go...
I know you want to promote downloadable music and all, but the power of tower is here to stay. unless i see the wrecking ball break the back of it, tower records will continue to be an iconic part of shibuya for many years to come.
just food for thought |

Like it was expected the Japanese market has officially collapsed with reduced sales numbers ranging from 50%-70% according to the conversations i had the last month with many respected artists and label owners many of whom collaborated with the top Japanese labels and distributions.
It was inevitable i guess.
