Format: CD
Label: Twisted
Cat. #: SOLMC047

AHAHAHA, so I’m beating all the hardcore twisted fans on this one. I haven’t seen the cd out on the online shops yet, but I was lucky enough to stumble upon it in a Tokyo store, so sorry everybody but it does feel good to hold something so unique in my hands…

My apologies to some of you, as I am a very visual person, I don’t always have my way with words, just try to picture what I write to get a clear, precise idea of what is going on emotionally, for that is all that counts my friends. After re-reading some of it, I can definitely understand if you get lost…

1) Younger Brother – Epic Hair
Soft opening with some violin-like noises that carry you into some percussion. There is this twisted sound that carries you. First impression is that this is a softer Younger Brother than we have been used to in the past- pretty groovy for them. It does however hold all the ingredients of a simon and benji track; big beat and all, it’s just that it’s not quite as aggressive as their other full-on stuff, more mellow and definitely pleasant; more of a morning track.

2) Audio Chemistry – Long Long Arms
‘Green and blue patterns are falling all over me like a deck of cards… I have a feeling this is what Alice(?) paradise must be like… I don’t feel like I’ll ever be the same again… Next morning my arms were very long, long long covered with beautiful feathers... Long long arms covered by beautiful feathers, I don’t think I’ll ever be the same again…’
this one opens with this distorted voice and goes strongly into the groove. More powerful noises than the first one and more trancey while retaining a sophisticated approach. The voice, very simon, comes in after 4 minutes into waves of relief, makes you wish it was 5 in the morning standing in the middle of blasting speakers with a head full of acid. This one could pass as both night or morning but would recommend to play with the very first rays of sunshine to feel its true impact.

3) Hallucinogen & Tristan – Stretch Tastic
Starts with nice voices noises (alla infected shiva and sex with shiva) thrown in all over the place with distortions and nice effects. Groovy and morning, some great acid music once again with a very bouncy feel to it- due to the bass in big part but also the beat which sounds more fluid. Then with an acid-building instrument just to make all your body parts tingle and back into it after 3:20. They’re playing with your emotions, making different noises rise around you until you lose stability and then give you a little something to fall back on, like a pillow where you can be safe once again. At 5:20, here they come attacking once again to make you lose control- they’re in control, sorry bro- and then into the merry-go-round of their imagination, some older hallucinogen noises being hinted at to remind you of the good old times and you end on your pillow.

4) Prometheus - Oscar
This one starts out with soft tam-tam, slow rhythm and easy trancey melodies so you feel almost like in a chill-out room, small chime-bells ticking away in the back. After 1:40, he releases the beat and by this time your body unconsciously moves to the rhythm with no questions or objections, a very easy, lazy groove for the mind, perfect for when you have just drowned yourself in 4 hours of insane dancing and you need music that will make you fly on its own, effortlessly. You feel like thanking the artist for blessing your body and allowing you to separate from the pain and aches. He also starts to play with your head for a bit and takes it up a notch after 4:40- meaning that he’s releasing you from his hold and you dance away, now more consciously with a big smile. He’s definitely playing with you, sending his army of waves at you on different layers so you don’t know what to concentrate on or think about, brilliant. Morning track as well and some interesting work from benji, definitely a gift in refinement.

5) Tristan – Lost and Profound
Easy start as well, almost chill out, but you feel the horse rhythm coming at you and the string instruments take over soon enough. At about 2:00 into the song, he releases the beat like a bull in a corrida, middle eastern instrument giving command and all layers following its lead. Also a morning track, it seems I, a hardcore night person, am starting in the past few months to become a morning person. Interesting work on the melody, it doesn’t quite have as powerful an impact as the previous track, I feel. Perhaps a little too pop compared to the rest. But wait at about 5:20, there is a renewal and it seems more noises are taking command of where this bull of a song is taking us, galloping away and we’re almost running after it to catch up now. Driver, won’t you wait? At 6:30, we all finally catch up and here comes that middle eastern instrument again, but oh well it’s over too soon, could have taken us up on your back for at least another minute for full satisfaction.

6) Metal Sharon – Balloon Dance
Now there’s a duo, I’ve been wanting to hear in a while, as they share the same city. Deep into and very driven by this anticipating rhythm, you almost feel in the middle of a shamanic ritual somewhere in the depth of Africa. Beat comes in at 1:30 accompanied by a side of strange creature noises and deep midnight yells from a faraway victim. Some great ideas, almost a renewal in some strange way. After 3:50, things pick up and now some strange goblin is trying to communicate with us, the shamanic sages take care of the answer and then things fall into uncertainty for a minute…. Some third person joins the conversation and all is well; they will party together after all. The deal is sealed and on we go dancing around this open fire. People are completely wasted all around, now slurring at one another in mystical understanding, it is not a contest of who is louder but just all speaking together in harmony. Groovy and morning. Although it makes for a great story, not my favorite Hallucinogen track although I demand to hear more from this story.

7) Tristan & Prometheus – Grow More Pot
Now getting into some serious beat with Tristan and benji. These 2 are on a mission on this one. You feel they are trying to put a hold on us quickly so we know who’s in charge, they’re not setting us loose just yet, first they want to make us understand they’re in some somber business here. It starts getting trancey at about 2:50 and they slowly release their grab on us to set us free. Masters are calling and we are dancing away. This one sounds more like a night track, the first one really, so far. At 4:40, we have definitely taken off and only now do we realize what is happening to us after being slowly left on our own. Some small bell sounds bring us back to reality and we are definitely happy now although we don’t know where to look anymore.

8) Hikikomori – Black Ops
Never heard of you, but hell if God approves, then we shall… as they say. Soft intro, with some hints of darkness, and then a rise into space, where some robots are having words and some getting aggressive. Then things get more quiet with the princess of the skies coming to calm things down and we feel the robot’s love for this most precious creature. Us too, we want to love and nothing will stop us now. Except maybe these new rebel robots who join at 4:15 and perform rituals of war in front of our eyes. Things fall back to normal when peace is decided upon by all parties. This one is more progressive than the other tracks and also has a darker edge to it. Almost like a war and peace epic.

Conclusion- Great compilation, if there is one group that can’t go wrong, it is the simon posford posse. I read traveler once comparing twisted to fine wine and there is no better way of putting it, this crew produces bed time stories, music with a tale unraveling itself, it speaks to you without words and gets the most of your emotions. That said, I give it a 10/10. twisted has definitely gone down a new route here, experimenting around with more styles and genres. It’s mostly morning stuff here and they do it very well. Hope I didn’t lose too many of you there… Get this cd, really.

Favorite tracks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6

Keep it up twisted and hope that you keep on maintaining the high-level of excellent music.

Good compilation, but nothing special. Frankly, I expected more from Twisted...

Metal Sharon track is really nice, though.

What an album!!!! Twisted never let us down.
Great comp to open the year with.
the Hallucinogen and Tristan track is very good and the Metal Sharon is HUGE one, can't wait for their album.
The Younger and Prometheus are very nice too.
Simon is never disapointing.

This is a top-notch release 9/10. I believe that Hikomori is Ott.           "Love is a way of life"

I heard someone else say that - and I am inclined to believe them. Maybe the vocals give it away. Nice track though

I do like this cd, I just need to listen to it a few more times before I understand some of the tracks. I think the opener is really special, love the morphing squeaks that keep you smiling ! Really love the Joti and Siomon track - slightly annoying sample - it's Terrence again.

And I also expected a bit more from Merv and Simon, although I too look forward to hearing more from this duo - the landscape of Wiltshire will inspire them I'm sure!

Yes it is a problem, Twisted always late with their releases. I heard about the 3rd Shpongle and the Metal Sharon album supposed to be released 2 years ago. But when they finally release it you see it always been worth the waiting.           "My single one to cross the ways that have heart, any way that has heart. thanks for the encouraging words on the review guy & nadav, I'm glad u liked it.

the cd hasn't left my cd player since i got it, it is amazing, definitely a great compilation to play at all times, so much to discover in this music.

there is one track in particular that does not leave my head: track 4, Prometheus - Oscar, it is simply too good, rarely heard anything this remotely enjoyable.

Hikikomori track is also growing on me like crazy. there is not a single bad track on this compilation, and i stand by that.           www.frakasound.com
