mate also about the magic you were expecting it s often cause of a combinaison of tools..even with hardware,sure a real pair of pultecs or a tape machine or a CV can bring some goodness into materials , but from my little experience it s the combinaison of processors that really make difference, in pro studios, they record the source already with right mics , preamps ,eq compression... all this even before any mixing,, add the mixing tools... the signal run in multiple gears/plugins that all impart their sound caractere on the source , that what bring the difference, the right combinaison of tools and how they are used on the right sound.
even wiht some great hardware piece you could be disapointed when used on their own, its a chain that can really add something,with each processor adding their goodness |

sounds obvious. perfect source, perfect tools, perfect chain = tripple perfect xD
i tried FATSO yesterday, its really awesome, and i got what i was looking for with the first few presets without tweaking.
any other plug in you´d recommend?
damn this uad plugs seems like a bottomless piggybank^^

From a processing point of view it doesnt make any sense that plug ins running in a less powerfull CPU would have to be better that others running in up to date CPU.
If you want to offload some processing from your main DAW Reaper for example can use a second computer to host some plug ins, and they will connect via ethernet.

try the massive passive for highs and mids , and their tapes plugs and the neve comp.
for the mp and tapes nebula cost way less and sound as good or better with 3rd party librairies ... |
