Some recommendations of older dark & drone ambient from my collection:

Va - Nord Ambient Alliance (2002)
Va - Saturn Gnosis (2000)
Raison d'Etre - Requiem for Abandoned Souls (2003)
New Risen Throne - Whispers Of The Approaching Wastefulness (2007)

I remember years ago while talking to some friends that this kind of dark/drone ambient is often called funeral ambient (most silly name i ever heard). Probably because lots of church bells, choir song (especially in work of Raison d' Etre) but to call subgenre of ambient -funeral..i don't understand.

Great recommendation, thank you!

This world of post - black metal/industrial // ritual/dark ambient seems infinite.

Heard about this metal side of the scene for the first time after reading about the exploits of Varg Vikernes of Burzum and stuff he made with synths. That was quite interesting stuff though not so "dark"

Recommending a very deep and dark album...

I got this too, along with a bonus CDr of 4 additional tracks. Really amazing stuff. Worms' more hardcore stuff is great too.

So far I'm absolutely in love with Steve Roach. His music heals the spirit and is perfect for de stressing. Deep droning sounds that just let your drift away from reality.

I got the Pete Namlook tribute box set which is also wonderful but a different experience, as it has some 4x4 sounds & glitchy experimental styles.

I have found an online shop with a lot of Pete Namlook's CDs available so plan to explore these further as well.

Thanks for all the tips. Lots to explore.           Cuntus Maximus.

Listening to this when I read your post..so much emotion it's hard to handle at times. Depends of course on your current emotional state but stay away from it if things are not ideal

So after spending loads of cash & listening to loads of free stuff I found Steve Roach is the only ambient that truly works for me. I've got like 20 of his albums now, just got the 30 th anniversary edition of Structure For Silence which is just amazingly beautiful!

Anyway I just found all the others suggested here not to connect with me the way Roach does. Inspiring and healing music. Great bloke as well from the emails we've had. Really gave me great advice for dealing with life's problems.

One day I'd like to see him live.           Cuntus Maximus.

I generally don't like Steve Roach's work, at least the ten or so albums I've heard, as I find there's not enough dark/light balance for me (I feel the same way with a lot of "New Age" music, if it's all light it just sounds twee), but I bought the 24/96 remaster of "Structures From Silence" recently, and it is indeed an absolutely mind-blowing release. Perfect balance of minimalism, change, and dark and light emotional states. Highly recommended!           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma
