Yeah, i've heard about watermarks but i can't say i know enough about them to really comment. The only problem i can see with something like that (ie, something technical) is that it probably wont be long before there is equal technology to detect it/bypass it/remove it etc.
If music was marked 'artistically' it would be pretty much impossible to tell. Who knows what a piece of music should sound like?
Just an idea.
