what is the point in artists or djs doing their top 10 lists when all their chosen tracks seem to be their own unreleased tracks or if they are djs all the tracks are unreleased on their label. these lists are totally biased, useless as all the tracks seem to be unreleased and some never seem to be released. artists and djs should only be allowed to list their favourite tracks, not necessarily their own.....
they would then be much more useful to the cd buying public. am i right???? |

yes and no.
artists should put released track on their list, true.
but they should also put their and their friends,fellow artists,label's future directions and releases, which is very interesting imho.

A top with only unreleased tracks don´t give me any idea of the taste of the person who posted it. So I don´t like it.
It does makes me familiar with the names of the tracks that are about to come (and sometimes it tells me in what label they will come), but it´s somehow useless.
But the traders and the mp3 mafia loves it.

For me the top ten of a DJ serves few purposes:
1. telling us what he likes (and if we like his taste, what we might like).
2. telling us what he plays.
3. telling us what is to be expected too rock dancefloors soon.

so the dj likes his own stuff ... he plays his own stuff ... and expect his own stuff to rock the dancefloors ... if his own stuff is unrealesed - i can only judje his talent for finding unique track names , smth i never cared too much .. on the other hand if one likes 10 specific tracks most at the moment and accidently they all were just written in his home studio - it's his right to post'em .. after all , it's theirs favotites

Why dont make two top 10 sections, one for released and one for unreleased. If you want to mix you can post in the one you have most tracks of.
The top 10 section now is totally uninteresting for me, some tracks are not released until a half year later and some never at all... Top 10 for only released would be much more fun for me, and probably others too.

Mmmh by the way, I suppose that letting out unreleased tracks make deejays tipsy...
And this is understandable.... don't U agree ?
As long as they do it by pleasure and that it is not dicted by their labels, I don't really mind about it..

Actually, I used to write top10s.
I'd seriously go through my entire music collection each time, select the ones which were my most listened/favorites at the time, and basically use the top10 as a way to formulate my "musical mood" at the moment. As that, I find top10s very informative and interesting. Artists and DJs give stuff that they play, and as such it's also great to know what to expect from which DJ or artist when he's going to play. Label managers and other label affiliates give me ideas of what's going with the label and what to expect as the next big thing out of it.
Unfortunately, most people who make top10s just do it to show off their unreleased tracks. And yes, it shows on the top10. When someone writes "ULTRA KILLER DANCEFLOOR MURDERING TRACKS!!!!!!!!" as the topic for his thread, it's obvious he doesn't want the tracks to speak for themselves, but for himself.

Tops with only unreleased stuff don't serve your two first purposes.
And a TOP with only released tracks would serve these purposes and one more: help people find what to buy.

To the public:
A top10 of a dj or a label manager, is never intended to tell us what he likes! This is not a favourite top10 of the month - this is strictly to let us know what's 'cooking' in the label for a release porlly. Promotional thing.
Dj's are getting promos, which are unreleased of course in order to play them at parties and to put them on their top10 - that's it.
