I agree that many DJs don't know how to work the dancefloor energy or how to create a journey. If a DJ can't maintain the crowd's interest for 2 hours, they shouldn't be playing out at all, imo.

Very true. The Audiognomes policy is we only book new djs if they can produce a decent mix cd demo. It's better to practice at home and hone your skills than in front of a crowd and risk trainwrecks.

Unfortunately you can't always trust a mix cd on how well someone is in a live situation. I usually prefer to see some one play out before booking them.

I agree with Kaiser... it isnt too hard for someone to get hold of quality mix by any decent DJ and submit it as his/her own promo

Well. I don't expect people do that. But a DJ can make a mix in Ableton or practice the set for days to get it perfect, but when it comes to playing live they can't deliver..           AntiShanti/Sangoma

Speaking from a DJ/Organizer stand piont, it's all up to how many friends you have as DJ's. We ( Phoenix Family/Geomagnetic.tv) have a hard time giving more than 1 hr. slots cause of the # of DJ/Live Acts we have here in S.F.. When I first started DJing in 96', Nobody would book me, so I started throwing gatherings myself. I met Spook in 2000' and started throwing gatherings with other groups. So, I now how hard it is to break into a scene, so I try to give everyone possible a chance to contribute; doing deco, alters, lights, door shifts, bar shifts, ect. Not only should a DJ "ROCKSTAR IT" by giving out a demo, but they should also help work the gathering so he or she knows how much work goes into these gatherings. That goes for anyone who has a complaint about how things are going. There's way to many critics and not enough help. So, if your going to a gathering and there are 8 DJ's and only 8 hrs., thank the trance gods you have that many SHAMANS and practicing SHAMANS in your area. If you need 3 hrs. of someone and your not getting it, collect some mixes from them and play them back to back.
It's hard to tell your friends "NO" when there's 12 hrs. of gathering and only 4 DJ's. Rockstars comes to mind when you think in those terms. What ever happened to "The more, the merrier". And if a DJ can't tell a story in 1 hr., they should go back to the bedroom and practice alittle more and record themself every time. You give me 1 hr. and I'll give you a J.R.R. Tolkien epic!

a Tolkien epic takes 2000 pages for a reason - even though you could do a Reader Digest version in 30 pages, I'd rather read the whole thing. Yes, I know it's possible to play a great one-hour set - but a good DJ can play much better when there are no tight time constraints and he/she can weave the tale and really bring everything to a proper finale.

and maybe if you have 8 hours and 8 DJ friends, let 4 of them play for 4 hours, and the other 4 can play next time. they'll still like you , and the flow will be much better, in my opinion.

hehe

i meant let 4 of them play for 8 hours, and the other 4 can play next time.

and yeah, the DJs who aren't playing can help work the door and gain valuable bouncer/promoter/cashier experience.
