i think also you need to consider in what sense the promoter is contracting you to do a service. if that service is specifically just to warm down gently or whatever, then to get up and play tech is not right (imo) on the other hand if it is clearly at your discretion then check the crowd and see what you could play to your taste and their taste, if such is possible, if not go cry in a corner after putting a PVD cd on           >>love will tear us apart...<<

While you don't want to give people the wrong idea of what kind of music you play, you don't want a whole room of people saying "What a sh*tty DJ that was..."

I think of a party with Xavier. I've seen him several times - he usually plays really head-trip tracks, not usually full-on stuff. But he can play full-on style and I've seen the party really go off when he did.

At one party, the big hall was full of people saying, "Come on, man. Bring it up!" but he didn't. I could tell he knew he wasn't giving the crowd what they wanted. He wasn't connecting with the crowd. While he wasn't being led by the crowd, he certainly wasn't leading the crowd either. Then, for his encores, he played full-on and the crowd went crazy, like "Finally!" At the end, he raised his arms in victory, like he gave a killer set. But people only liked his last 2 tracks. I found it rather arrogant, personnaly.

In summary, I think it's important to both lead and be led. Find that "delicate balance".
Connect with the crowd.

hey, if u'r closing the party u better not crap it up 4 the people. people remember best, the begining of the party and the end.
don't lose the crowd at the expense of being yourself, at least not when u give the closing set of the party.
once u have the main gig, u'll have couple hours of experimenting with your music and how the crowd reacts 2 it.
good luck man
btw where r u playing?
