ok, a small preview for the question:
ive been asked to close an after party, nothing much, half an hour at the end, so the resident will hear me out, if he likes, i get main stage next week. (its not the first time i played there, but the resident was never there).

now, my main thing is tech, which is not the line of music those afters play. so the dilema is: after the main guy comes down, i go up, the manager says: "thank you ***, and now please welcome avishay", and i let the record spin, what sound should come out of the speakers? a BIG BOOM that the people wont know what just hit them? or a very nice opening line like "i cant help you with what you must soon face.... (talamsca)".

Well, here's my opinion -

You need to decide if you are a DJ that plays what HE likes and the ppl who come will decide if to come next time or not or to be a DJ that plays according to what the crowd asks for. Do you want to lead or to be led?
I think that if you're not too keen on working there (like, it's not your all time dream) then be yourself. Don't sell yourself short for popularity.
Besides, what do you know, maybe they'll be excited with the new kind of music. Maybe they'll think it's something fresh for them

Avishay i think you should take the gig and find the fine line between what you play and what's usually played in that place .
everybody knows that there's 20 dj's on every 3 party people .
this way you get more 'real' experience (not just practice) people get to know you , you get to know the people and if it's a paying gig i'm sure you wouldn't mind getting paid .
there's a lot of GREAT dj's that don't get the break you get, use it .

i seem to agree more with karnaf, but maybe thats just because i hoped for such an answer, i get my fair share of breaks, just not here in ber sheva, i dont mind putting what the people want, and i like the music too, i just dont like djing it (not much to do)
so the thing is if to get known, i want to be known as who i am and not as what the money made me to.

First - how much you need the money?

Second - I agree with Leon

Take it easy many things in this world take a lot of time to achieve and the most TRUE of them takes lifetime.. So relax and do your thing           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

the money is always an issue, but i think that with music it shouldnt be.
its true that these things take time, and i have that time, i think if you try to hurry up time, youll end up with nothing, for example: if i try to boost my self now, then people will come next time thinking theyll get what they got last time... and 'evualla, i am known (good) as a full on dj (bad).
yuli, you told me yourself, dont play what you dont like. true that there are too many dj's, i think if youre good at waht YOU do, youll get your shot.

Don't play stuff you don't like, naturally, but just cut to the chase, in half an hour you don't have a lot of time to express yourself.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

Well Avishai I know that I did tell you not to play what u don't like, but like most of things in life it has it's BUT.. But you don't always do in life what you WANT and you do what you NEED or HAVE to do in order to go forward.. Call it Sell-Out? maybe.. it all depends on your self integrity and the line is different from one to another.

You need the money - with money you can buy new CD'J or some more vinyls to play on the next party. With money you can also buy food Don't ever forget about that.. bcuz with PRIDE you wont be able to buy shit, so sometimes..

You can put a track that u personally like less and even enjoy what it does on the floor he he..           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

take the Gig! play whatever the guy wants you to play... after you get a few more gigs, people will know you, and you will be invited to more gigs (if you are good)... once you've establsihed yourself and you have a reputation, then you can start getting wild, and play whathever you like...

my point is - don't turn down this oppurtunity, because you might not get another one... Carpe' Deum! (sieze the day )           MiniMAL cabron...
