and I personally have serious doubts that digital distribution is more honest than the physical distribution.
how can you be sure that the amount of downloads they declare is real ?
only because it is digitally controlled ?
we all know that digital information isn't perfect, and pristine...and that is very easy to manipulate it.

it is a fair point...
i'd suggest that the larger the company the safer you are...
the logic being that a large company has too much to lose to engage in dubious accounting...
that is not to suggest that smaller companies aren't straight up in their accounting...
another factor i mentioned before is exposure to risk... if your digital partner goes down then getting paid becomes a tricky issue... regardless of the accuracy of their statements.
for brett - i think that high quality wavs are available, albeit at quite a high price for some, from the dj oriented services already mentioned. as bandwidth and storage becomes ever cheaper there will be less justification for the higher prices.
for a label/artist to offer such downloads direct it is not too challenging - but the label/artist would not benefit from the high traffic that these services enjoy.
roughly speaking this is the formula:
visibility x page views = greater sales volume.
most digital retail promo revolves around trying to place titles where they will be easily seen by most number of interested or potentially interested people. In particular these people would not, ideally, be people already visiting the artist/label site.
