I went to a shop the other day to buy a pair of monitors, thinking that you might need a pair of golden ears to make the right/perfect choice...I could easily distinguish the difference between the monitors I listened to...they've all got their pros and cons and I just couldn't find the perfect monitor , some are good in the lows and mids but not so good in the highs and vice versa .I listened to Dynaudio,Mackie,Genelec,Adam and a few more.Reckon to get the perfect sound/monitoring you would have to spend SHITLOADS($xxxxx+) of money or buy more than one pair or design your own custom made monitors and of course good room acoustics .....so when people can't tell you which monitors are the best/perfect and that you should use your ears , they are not trying to be funny,it's just impossible to tell , especially if you are only spending a few thousand dollars .So take your favorite cd's to the shop , sit back and make up your own mind.I was ready to fork out any amount up to about $3000....I ended up buying a good second hand pair of Mackie HR624 for under $1000 ....just cause I honestly think that the xtra $2000 won't necessarily make my music sound that much better .(IMHO) |

just received my cute adam s1's. relatively small speakers, starting at 40 Hz. very detailed.
with a boomy kick on higher volume i get some air in my face coming from the holes on the front.
now i am switching between my (for sale) bluesky mediadesks and the s1's while playing a cd from astrix (supposed to be well produced).
different soundplanet.
ok, its not fair to compare such (moneywise) different speakers, still this budget-leap (3 x) pays off. now on the s1's i hear distortion on a kick that i did not hear on the cheaper speakers.
adam s1 rocks. |

After reading through most of this thread, I understand that you get what you pay for. I am under strict budgetary constraints so I was checking to see what people say about stuff less than $150.00 USD.
Why are m-Audio and the likes so bad that they are not worth looking at? Should I just stick with my computer speakers until I can afford better monitors? It may be months before I can afford anything everyone here is excited about.
And finally, I play a lot of computer games. Can I use monitor speakers to do that as well?
My musical tastes are more hardstyle/hardbass. Pulsedriver is one of my favorite DJs. But then again, I like a lot of trance. The reason I bring that up is because perhaps that will help someone help me pick a viable option for studio monitors given my tastes.
I have looked at the Yamaha HS80M studio monitors and everything I have read indicates that may be a good choice.
TIA,
Michael |

those of you like hradek, who need decent monitors, but can't spend money on genelecs (neither can I right now) and want 'studio monitors'....... go buy a pair of EMU PM5's www.emu.com and you can add their sub-woofer on to that if you need it.
these are decent monitors, than can be called 'studio monitors'
they are a little more expensive than the alesis MK's, m-audio(crap), etc., but they are well worth it. The next step up from these would be getting into the genelec category.
The Alesis MK's don't sound that bad initially, but the bass sounds artificial when compared to the EMU's...... same goes for a lot of these other less expensive monitors. They might make the music sound ok, but they color the sound too much...... sometimes exagerrating frequencies that seem to disappear when you play your music on different speakers.
The frequency response of the EMU's is not quite as flat as the test specs sheet from the Behringers in the same price range, but they somehow manage lower volumes much more consistantly, which can be important for mixing. The Behringers also seem to sound too bright for some reason IMO.

Yamaha ns10's sound bad, but there's a reason why people still use them in 'studios'.
I said they are accurate for low-end studio monitors.
The speakers in my old saturn sounded great
