Hi! I wanted to ask for your opinion about this. I'm building my first home DAW, and a friend of mine has 2 studio monitors, M-Audio BX-5 (used) and he's offering them to me for about $250. He would give me a midi controller along with it, for "free" (m-audio oxygen). Are these good monitors? enough to start? Or should I save money for better ones?
Thanks in advance |

I agree.
As far as cheap monitors go they are quite good.
It's not my type of monitor at all, a bit to harsh and fatiguing, but they are for sure possible to get a decent mix on and good value.
Also it's not a wasted investment even if you decide to get better monitors later on....it's always good to have a couple of speakers to cross reference on.

Ok, thanks.
Do you have special rooms for your studios? because I don't see the point of spending money on monitors if the room has no good acoustic. In that case headphones would be better, right? since they isolate external noise and create an "acoustic room" in your ears.
Of course I can be wrong, so I'll wait for your comments. |

With a small pair of nearfields the room should not be too much of an issue.
You should mostly be hearing direct sound and very little of the room, and since the bass response is limited it's a lot easier to deal with any issues.
Mixing on only headphones can be hard to get right in my experience.
As a cross reference they are handy or if you have experience comparing the sound of your headphones to the speakers you can get good results, but for many people who start out mixing on only headphones it can be quite a shock to hear what it sounds like when they listen on a pair of speakers.

Ok. I think I'll buy them.
One more thing: these are the Studiophile BX5, a model that was discontinued. Today's model is "BX5A" . Should I still go for it?
thanks |

I own a pair of yamaha Hs 80.
For that price range it s the best one i heard.
Fat basses , crisp highs, clean mids.
The only "problem" its around 200 - 500 hz, when a little hums make it blur. but that is not a problem if u have train your ears with them.
As i have heard NS 10 series i can ensure you this is much different speaker. (its not possibe to create a same one after 25 years of xpirience.)
But its also a reference monitor that can be used for many mixes of electronic music.
Even if u have a Genelec or Beyerdynamic (i am going for a pair soon ) u still MUST have Hs 80 for your final mix.
Solid as rock - powerfull enough - beauty with the white cone.
Thats from me.
Dimitris.
ps. Do not Try the HS 50 series. Its nt reccomended for that kind of music and every kind that need some more low freqs. except if u have in your mind to make 2.1 system with HS 10 Sub.
