A friend of mine needs help in choosing a soundcard for listening music and watching 5.1 movies from PC. The card should be relevant to the following system:

amplifier (or receiver) - http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/specifications.php?PID=106&Title=%26%231057;%26%231087;%26%231077;%26%231094;%26%231080;%26%231092;%26%231080;%26%231082;%26%231072;%26%231094;%26%231080;%26%231080;

Speakers - 5.1 system

inner PCI card preferred.

oops didnt notice it was that class
so why asking, if theres plenty of money he can get even a Lynx with separate converters for watching movies
but what kind of budget is for the card really? a motu maybe would be perfect
http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/ultralite-mk3
supports also 6.1,7.1

well, after some research i assume that any, even cheap soundcard with optical output will do the job just fine, because optical=digital => no quality loss.
The only possible problem is jitter. Can anyone give a quick advice about jitter, is it really something i should think about in that case or not?

yeap you pass by the conversion, had forgot that
but jitter??? nothing to do with that kind of use, even the RME cards produce jitter of nanoseconds i think,, these values are impossible to make something audible or to produce lower signal quality in the range of a decent soundcard youre after (in terms of money always)
jitter is produced by the components(transistors etc) of the machine, therefore it exists everywhere if im not mistaken,, if your friend will use the card with a PC a great solution would be an HDSP by RME without converters, only with ADAT-SPD/IF on the back, and can be found also used, a lot of times ive seen it on ebay and forums

Greating everyone
I got a issue , i trying to decide , so it would be great to have some opinons e feedback.
So the thing is , i goins to buy a sound card, i between Motu utra lite and RME 400.
i m more into the RME, but anyone can tell m why is RME better?or what are my advanteges in getting a RME and note the motu utra lite.I currenttly working on pc, but i have a mac and problably i will start(again) produce in a cople of months.
By the way , i think this is a importante question since this is a soundcard treat.
What makes a Soundcard good? And why?
Ok drivers..right? more? dynamic range?frequecy range?Latency?ins & outs ? and more?
hopping to get some feedback guys

The Motu is more flexible with it's USB and tough casing.
The quality of RME is slightly better.

I don't think I'm totally sure what you're suggesting, but I can tell you that there are different types and sources of jitter, one of which is line induced. Connecting a digital output to an external DAC will add jitter, regardless of the DAC's clock crystal quality. Some of it can be caused by low quality and low precision components that cause phase noise and other distortion mechanisms. Most digital interconnects will also attenuate high frequency components of the signal, causing a transition delay. So, yes, buying a cheap interface/sound card just to use its digital output will probably have a detrimental effect on the sound.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

Does anyone have any experience with lexicon soundcards? I'm looking at this one, the lexicon omega...

http://www.lexiconpro.com/ProductIndex.aspx?ProductID=6

It looks great with heaps of i/o but i need to know how reliable it is, and how good the quality really is.
