Halu!
Currently I have the M-audio delta AudioPhile 2496..
It have served me really well..like no latency and no problems=) I'm into Cubase SX3 and Windows XP SP3 on a high power desktop computer(Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz; 3GB RAM)..At the moment I have Nord Rack 2 using the only audio input on the card..For monitors I have Dynaudio BM6A But soon i can afford a more pro card and a virus TI Desktop...So then i need a couple of more audio inputs on my new soundcard that i will buy when i invest in the virus..probably 3 + 1 for the nord right? and it could be cool to have maybe some more in case of buying any oldiesynth for fun in future=) So my question is..Can I buy a really good PCI card or do I need to buy a firewire card? Wich ones should I look closer to due to my upcoming needs=) ? Would be grateful for some good advice..peace! |

I've had arange of cards from maudio, esi, emu, echo,NI and wish i had gone for an RME the first time.
never had any problems with it sofar, all the others gave me trouble from time to time.
Rme has really got top grade converters.
Even Motu we had troubles with(ultralite).
Save yourself alot of headaches get an RME. |

seriously considering an apogee duet for my macbook pro, but would i need a special cable to connect the duet's unbalanced line outs to the balanced inputs on my monitors? or will the cables i already have for my m-audio firewire solo's balanced outputs (1/4 inch jack) to the xlr inputs or 1/4 inch jack inputs be fine?
This is just for bedroom setup, not involving super long cables. Cheers. |

I have a new MacBook Pro and Apogee Duet. The converters are the best available (or so I heard) but I really like that it is compact for mobility and the jog dial is great for quick volume adjustments. 75 dB of headroom.
But.....
No MIDI in and limitied connectivity. Also one output pair only so if you need to split your outs for DJ applications (there is a way!!). It's firewire, so your express slot is still available for something like the UAD2 box
My workaround for MIDI (since I have keyboards that are MIDI only no USB, is to get a midisport or something. But if you're looking to track vocals or instruments on the go, the Duet is great. You might want more for your $500 though.
I had an E-MU 1616M which I still use but I think E-MU is gone these days.

hello people!
first of all i like to thank you all for your big help!each time when i visit the forum i learn something new!
these days i want to update my (mini) home studio and i want some advises!
1. what you prefer to me to buy, laptop or pc?
-> i have seen many people prefer laptops, what's your opinion? laptops are good but i think with same money i will build a powerful pc.
2. I want your advice to buy a soundcard. I have 350 euro to spend for. I dont use many hardware (i use only midi keyboard and controller) and in the future maybe i buy a synth. i use M Audio - Studiophile BX8a Deluxe monitors.
do you recomend firewire or pci and why?
if you have time please tell me your recomendations. is very important for me.
thanks a lot
have a nice week

Hey d-vision.
I think it's really personal taste between laptop and desktop.
If you have a lotpot it's easy becouse then you don't need to buy anything else for playing live.
I prefer a desktop at home, and a seperate laptop, but offcourse you need to have the budget for it. It's more easy to work on a desktop and like you say more power for the same money.
Witch soundcard is also a difficult question.
I know witch ones I don't want anymore, and that's motu & m-audio.
Now I use a presonus firestudio at home and for live, and my partner has a RME, witch is also very good. So no complains about those 2 soundcards. |

I'd really like to have an RME if I can stand saving for it, but is it really worth the price? How are the converters on them? I assume you're paying for quality since you can get the same features for less than half the price with other brands..

RME have amazing converters, and a special digital clock that makes the sound crystal clear.
It is worth it, really.
There's a reason to the expansive price, it's not just the brand or whatever...quality components and sound.
IMO that's what separates the world of pros and amateurs : good gear !

Hey all. I have an M-Audio Fast Track Pro connected to a pair of Yamaha HS80Ms and I'm getting a lot of hissing noise out of them. There is a slight hiss in the tweeter when the monitors are on but not plugged in (pretty much have to have your ear right next to it to hear it). Is this mostly due to the monitors, the sound card or a combination of both? What can I do to fix this (first without buying new equipment)? Is there a better sound card I can get that won't be terribly more expensive.
I am just starting up so I don't need professional grade equipment, just something to get the job done that won't give me problems. Thanks!
