Hey i finally found that future music mag which talked about kick synthesis. Nothing ground-breaking but it's interesting reading nonetheless. Three different synthesis designs are presented and ways to implement them using real-life synths (they're using Reason mainly, but basicly any synth subractive can be used). Eq'ing kicks and different effects are discussed too. Also found a article about fattening kicks. The first one is 10 pages, latter 4 pages.

I've scanned the pages and made a pdf of them but I don't know whether I should put them somewhere. I have a personal webpage but I'd rather not put anything there that would violate copyright laws...

If you're interested, you can PM me. And maybe I'll write a short message here later on considering the main points of the text(s)...

im sure you have at least one kick
open it in a sequencer
reopen it in a different channel
now you have two kick channels

now put EQ, compressors, Ultramaximizers and all of that stuff and play with both of them.
if you need more bass, put the low freqs up
if you need more punch, then remove the bass from one of the kicks and now you have only the "punch" remained.
play with those, you can do whatever you like.
you can take up to whatever you like kicks,

EQ is the real kick creater
good luck

yoo , this is how i did my best kicks, and i m sure it s the best way if you can t find the really killer kick , you have really good kicks but only the low or only the high are great, it s typical ...what can you do is layering 2 kicks you like to do one but you can do better !!! open a kick you like the high (usually it s the start of the kick ) and one you like the low (the end of the kick) in wavelab, now delete the middle and the end of the sine wave of the high kick where it s sound good and cut the start of the other kick, copy and paste ... you have one kick with perfect wave if you do it well and perfect sound ... remember your kick should be not too long ,neer 120 ms if i remmember well for full on tempo.if you prefer layering the 2 samples ,soemtimes i do it in cubase , be carefull they start at the same times , usally i cut neer 200/250 the low one(low pass filter) and 750/800 the high one(hi pass)to remove all mudiness .

the very best way to produce your own kick is ... :
Take a metal stick and smash it on a car as hard as you can, don't forget to record the moment when you're hitting it.

Owyea before I forget ...
I'm not respondable for troubles.
