this thread cracks me up...
a bent sine is the way kicks are made... ask any serious producer who makes their own kicks...
in all genres of electronic music...
(ok except a sampled bass drum like a rock kick...)
and just what do you think a 909 is ? a bent sine...
also a resonant filter sweep kick- a bent sine
or stomper- a bent sine...
if you want a different sound than just a straight sweep, try bending it in different ways...
different amounts...
its all in the bend i promise you...
you need nothing else to get a roomshaking kick...
or a hard thwonk, or a phat thwump, or a round wump or a zonk or a boom...

hey ocelot! that's what i saw in some tutorial of infected.co.il and firstable create some sine fm sine wave form, so now set up into pitch bend +/- 2 semitones so now put one line across the wave form, set up +2 semitones -0% go down to -2semi-100%. the second step meants puts up the semitone to +/-24 semitones and line in right side up going down untill 50% -24semi tone! so blabla.. by the way i did it all about and i cannot make that sound like a serious kick...... so what's up here?? could you explain me.... |

I use a sine that goes straight through the mix from the top and rapidly settling at around 50-70hzish, then I eq out bits that I don't want to hear, somtimes even placing a notch filter around 10k. This is the only processing I use on it until I group compress it with my bass later on.
What can I say. It sounds like a psy kick. I used to do loads of crazy things like layering a 909 sub with a sine attack and other higher drum sounds but ocelot is right. This is that sound.
Obviously if you want a different sound by all means experiment, but if you want that well known psy kick, this is how it's done. |

The phase of the kick drum in relation to the bass is as important as the pitch, as has been mentioned here before. You can fix it manually by sliding one of the other a few samples back or forward, or you can use a plugin, such as Progress Audio's PhasePhix.

i ve noticed that most kiks hav good stereo width betta than all those plain boring mono kiks.try putting an effect over it such as a phaser, obviosly u'd hav 2 narrow the stereo width so the left and right peaks at same level then bounce down.personally i cant b bothered with the infected mushroom tutorial, and would rather use bazzism. |

PoM, I don't like the way you left so much sustain on the kicks. Reshaping them with a sampler is too much work.

When clouds moisten, rain forms. |

jivamukti do you have battery? you set only one time the envelop and then you can browse all the samples with it, i just tried them with a bassline and the first impression was omg they all sound like shit haha but with the good envelop, try 150 ms hold time and 150 decay time,no sustain ,fine tuned with the bassline i think they are good |

I was wondering, how can I make a kick like Prometheus. All his kicks cut right through the track. They have a snappy high, and a thick bottom end. I've tried to get the same sound, and I always come up short. Any advice? |

maybe you could try to distort the kick.
yesterday i was experimenting a little bit and i made a nice discovery while i was playing with the tonic-filter over the bassline, and i noticed that the kick sounds really nice when you use the distortion over it..
also i think prometheus often use a very short reverb over his kicks, small room-size, short realeese time and no delay or at least only a few ms. |
