Without getting too technical about it...to get that essential big kick, you need more than one sound source (at least two) added together. One sample or sound cannot produce the required effect, especially for trance music.

There are infinite possibilities but as a general rule, I would suggest a good Roland 909 sampled kick EQ'd for the "snappy" part and an analogue synth like a Novation BassStation or Juno 60/106 for the sub part. Add em together, play around with the synths attack/release and EQ/level/compress both parts until it sounds powerful enough in the mix. You can add very subtle distortion if needed to help create some 2nd order harmonics that will help it cut through your mix but distortion , like reverb also weakens it.

Don't sample it, rememver you need to compress with the raw sounds playing together. With midi notes you can get slight phasing due to the midi timing delay of a few milliseconds so to minimise this effect always use the first 2 tracks of the sequencer for the kick parts.

After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.

synoptic, that's a bit funny advice on not sampling the kick. First of all, making the midi tracks first in the sequencer does not by any means guarantee minimal midi delay and even though you'd get minimal delay it is still delay. If it's variable, you get phasing problems no matter what.

If you want the kick to be solid and you don't need to vary the relative velocities between the samples, why not bounce the layered eq'd and compressed kick and load it in the sampler/use in the audio track?

Anyway, I agree with you about the layering, it's the key to fat kicks in trance or any other electronic genre...

sounds luike a thread about analogue bassdrums vs. sampled (digital) bassdrums.

SAMPLED (digital): sound always the same. you can like it or not. - the old drum machines like 909 generated the bassdrum with a sine oszillator and they perform(ed) pretty powerful. but if you work with regular synths, you may want to sample the bassdrum, because some of this synths do not have a constant performance with the attack envelope.

however, you can also use a sampled bd for the subbass and mix some analogue part to it. that gives it a certain more lively feeling, if you perfer that.
