cut the kick's main freq out of the bass.
so ill try rephrase it, if my bass is not on the same note as my kick, do i have to cut any freq from my bass to allow the kick to shine through?
the more i ask this question the more i would think the answer is no - they should be considered independant? |

I reckon it depends how you want the kick/bass to sound.
Do this check list first:
1- kick more present than bass?
2- Bass more present than kick
3- kick with "click or without?
4- Bass with HF buzz or not?
5- Bass with body?
6- Bass with LF hum?
7- Kick with long tail or short?
8- Seqencing k-b, k-b-b, k-b-b-b and other mutations
Of course you got to pick a combination that matches and sound nice , before you even start eqing. After this you start eqing to achieve contrast and between the body of kick and body of bass. then you eq further to make the transition of freqs between these 2 seemless. ie. lowend of bass with lowend of kick, like crossfading of frequencies.
And be focused what endproduct you are after, and give your ears a rest from time to time, cos LF is a bitch ;-)

I'm really into the bass sound that Electypnose uses in his track "Make or Quake" off the Digital Psionics compilation "Psionic Entity". You can preview it here:

Can someone show me how to make a bass sound like this?
I'm guessing I start with a basic saw wave with an open cutoff and a lowpass filter. I'd like to learn how the ASDR would be set and how to EQ and compress the sound.
I'm using Vangaurd but I'm open to learning it in Albino or Predator. |

quite simple...
basic saw wave wih sidechain comp and a lot of glide (portamento), it makes the thing "sliding" between notes

yes, instead of writing your notes let's say in 1/32 (as usual) and playing with decay/sustain to adjust notes length, put your sustain value all the way up and adjust your note lengths when writing them down.
With this method, u can write veeeeery long notes that u can tweak with glide
generally i EQ my bass track with a low pass filter (-5/6 db @ 500Hz) and i boost a few db's @ 3500Hz to have the body. If u start with a fat saw wave u don't need to EQ that much...

Thanks Hugaw! I played in manually the bassline then adjusted to for timing rather than drawing it in. I'm pretty pleased with the way it's sounding so far. About the kick, I've got the sidechain going but I don't want too much or I cut out too much of the bass line. Should I do some db cut in the low end of the kick so I don't get an uneven low end sound? Or should I maybe compress the two together? And I'm not all that familiar with how compression works. Just with side chain. |

use a shelving filter instead of hi passing the kick and listen,, if it needs hi pass then cut it , but a little or else you ll get a lot of resonance at the low end and it ll get bigger ,, but do not compress you kick+bass , especially together,, make them fit

listened to it.
for me its too dark, bass is way too low. sound of bass is nice, kick is good too.
i heard an error on the 7th Beat in the bass, whats there?
More Dynamics, play with the volume of the bassnotes, make them more dynamic.
But overall its ok other sounds too. |

I take mostly Trilogy, sometimes I also take Alien 303 but not often because it sounds always the same.
For make up i use:
Sonalksis Eq
Waves Low Eq cut till 53hz
2 Quadra Fuzz
Tc Works Side Chain compressor
but i think the most important thing is, that the preset which you use, sounds clear, without all these Effects. Later you can use them only for make up and to push up your bass. |
