Hi there!
I think I finally discovered the right VSTi for psytrance bassline, Alien303.
My friend recommended it to me. I just tried it out and it's really awesome!
I guess for lots of people in the psyscene who are starting to produce music and always asking themselfs, how do my favorite artist create such a powerfull, rocking bassline, this synthesizer will be a godsend.

just cehck it out! |

hey williamsk,
i wouldn't use a multiband comp. in the bass at all, personally.. it's much easier to mess a sound up with a multiband comp. than to make it sound better, imo.. i use a normal compressor, if any..
also try varying with the position of eq and compressor. an eq before the compressor will have a different effect than the same eq after the compressor.
if you're working with fullon basslines, try using quadrafuzz, first preset with some slight variations will do i think.. see if you like it, it's a matter of taste
as for the delay; it really depends on your style and what you want to achieve.. i would, however, put the delay and AFTER that a sidechain linked to the kick, so that the delayed part doesn't get in the way with the kick.
good luck,
human

A quick one and probably a stupid one but nonetheless...when you guys say -
EQ the bass to the Kick what do you mean?
What are you trying to do? what are you trying to hear? what are you hoping to see in the spectrum analyser?
Can someone explain please?
Cheers

| If you go back to page 44 in this thread..Fuzzkitten has pretty much explained what that is...unless you're talking about something else.

Maybe this has been posted in some form in one of the previous 52 pages of this thread, but anyhow, this is how i've been getting really good results lately:
For the kick i use a mono audiotrack with a kick sample, so i can change the length of the kick while making sure it stops on a zero-crossing. Before importing the kick, i first use a sampler to pick the right sample in combination with the bass-synth and tune of the bassline (skipping through my kicks folder). By using audio instead of a sampler you can make sure that the tail of the kick stops before the first note of your bassline (a bit like in Mike A's excellent bassline tutorial).
Next, i tweak a bass-synth followed by PSP Vintage Warmer, Steinberg Quadrafuzz and a good EQ to perfection and bounce the resulting bassline to audio at the maximum possible level without clipping.
-the vitage warmer has a medium tape saturation preset with some tweaking.
-the quadrafuzz is on the default preset, with a few dB low-mid reduction and a few dB gain tweaking.
-the parametric eq i use has a steep low-cut to remove rumble, and a few high-q dips to remove resonances in the area between 100 and 300 Hz for removing muddiness.
After importing the resulting wave on a mono audio track i cut out the silences between notes, and place the notes on the grid (if necessary). Then i make sure that the audio-events for each note stop on a zero-crossing and don't bite the kick nor eachother. Next, i tweak the fade-handles on the audio-events a bit to remove any 'plopping' sounds that may arise from steep zero-crossings.
And there you have it: a clear and defined bassline that makes you casually hop through your studio.
This overly specific description may sound like a lot of tedious work, but it actually gave me a psycho killer bassline in about 15 minutes (not counting the years of fruitless tweaking that came before those 15 minutes).

hey Boobytrip thanx for the advice, im going to try that one for sure! but tell me something (or anybody):
Whats the difference between doing that and using an envelope shaper? if im not mistaken, you can make the envelope shaper to be triggered for each note, so luckly if you tweak it enough you can avoid using your bass as an audio file ... i saw this in the Andi Vax video but i couldnt get the Dynamic Envelope Shaper that comes with Cubase 4 (if somebody can pass it on i would be very happy)
Im very interested in this because im finally getting really close to the bass sound i want, i think the envelope shaper will make this adittional improvement.

well, I've been sampling basses and mapping them to Sampler, in Live which has quite alot of shaping options, including envelopes...
the nice thing about booby's method is that you visually see what you're doing making it somehow easier, you can do it with sampling too, i guess =p
  un-fucking-believable |
