The Indian DJ Voting Phenomenon

Ok, so it looks like the political rallies have subsided as this voting phenomenon comes to a close. Through this whole process I've been left with one thought...

"Why?"

From underground psytrance producers like Kerosene Club & Braindrop to the mainstream ones like Jalebee Cartel, everyone seems to have jumped on-board the bandwagon.

Was even more surprised at the extent of these campaigns. Janux offering free entries to the Skazi parties for votes. Shivamoon with organized online promo that would give the Obama campaign a run for their money. It even saw our US based moderator Jeto jump into the pool.

So this topic is not a critical one but one to figure out what really is the motivation behind this phenomenon? Why the rallies? I'm actually relieved to see no dirty politics which was really commendable. The campaigns as well have really shown the kind of quality marketing some of the DJs can unleash.

This topic is a question to the campaigners and the voters. Does this voting/ranking change your booking opportunities? Is it a fair estimate of your popularity? Do voters really vote for music or are they just voting for buddies? Is this what the psytrance scene currently represents in India?

Lots of questions looking for answers and a potential for some good discussion so please keep this thread crap free.

... and now that I see that there were only 8 entries in the chillout category, I'm actually wondering 'what if'

So yes, this is not a call to arms but a call to discussion to figure out what people are thinking when they go down this road. Would love to hear from some of the big guns in the campaign.

Please discuss peoplez.

voting is probably the most useless thing
i mean there is no quality check on the voter for all you know computer could be voting for a monkey and the monkey would become a president ...that already happened in two consecutive US elections and similar thing happened in India to and we have morons ruling our lives...because stupid people vote           When death comes to your doorstep, make sure you are alive

yes, it was sad to see even asad do this (i thought it was lame because he doesnt need this, and is a master dj/story teller aka prince of darkness hehe)

I just think everyone is doing this for more popularity..Yidam, methinks you missed the bus

i def think this not the representation of the 'scene'..there are many artistes lurking in their labs waiting to unleash their sounds.

please vote for your favourite JackAss at

http://myfavJackAss.in

Vote for me and i promise free entry to all rakhi sawant shows and full DVD kit of all Ekta Kapoor serials and "How to bowl like a Hero" book by Ajit Agarkar.

By the way. have the organisers thrown any light on how their online voting is trust worthy and all.           --------

Yeah I definitely missed that bus.

so basically this offers:

no info on awards
but a bunch of the biggest mainstream music partners

The promise of glory is massive! but in essence what is actually being done is the whole DJ community being brought into a race blindfolded. Now that it's become so huge in terms of public response and celebrity support this is going to be that one staple competition. watch fliers next year..."#1 DJ plays LIVE".

I'm assuming all who have taken part in this understand this is what happens.

So the question again is "why?". what do you think this is going to do for the music in India ? Was this competition needed in an already fragmented scene?

This question especially goes out to those who produce & understand that none of it is ever linear anyway.

I'm not a producer, but methinks it boils down to this:

Some dj's and artists want to see how many people follow their music or enjoy their sets.. big deal. Psytrance..its producers don't come under the 'underground' category anymore. Morning tracks are used in fashion shows on tv and now being used in bollywood movies too. It's funny that the people looking for a little promotion in our country are always questioned or made fun of.

myfavdj includes every genre of music. and no one pretends to come out 'most talented dj' (how on earth does one judge that anyway? it's so subjective)... it tells you who's most popular at the time, i suppose. plus it's not just about voting. you also have a huge, categorised database of all of india's djs with a little trivia on all of them. it offers exposure, and could eventually serve as an important platform for the up and coming young ones to get noticed. what's the problem? i dont get it.

I can only please one person per day. Today's not your day. Tomorrrow isn't looking good either.

All the best to everyone out there if in case any one of you are in the list of Fav Dj. Keep up the good wrk.           Mushrooms make you do crazy stuff. great so we have some dialogue now

@ braindrop. in the nick of time you might have won u know.

@ bloodclot. you say some DJs want to see how many people follow their music or enjoy their sets. of course... every single one should!!! for that we have mixuploading sites, streaming sites, your own websites, hit/listen counters and bookings. how does a full fledged campaign trail give u a better estimate? noone's being made fun of... only questioned. and considering they're asking for votes, questions should be answered no?

@ neon. no it does not include every genre of music. the whole lot is clubbed under trance. maybe if psytrance was a subgenre? watch them put a dirty word like "psy" up there. also the database u talk about is a complete and utter mess. anyone can register. there was absolutely no groundwork done in that regard.

...and the problem is assumption that the public is stupid.

I've kind of figured out what the whole hype is about. A couple of respected organizers and their old-time DJ posse (who no-one dare questions) coupled with the biggest electronic festival in India, one heck of a corporate front-end and that's enough to make the whole country believe that this is the last authority on DJs.

watch the fun begin when competition, money and fame take over this seemingly harmless agenda. we'll see how many DJs will be happy about handing over their career to a number.

also wondering... do some of them realize what a pain in the ass it's going to be to campaign every year to keep the image up?

and on a positive note... can anyone see this polarizing the scene to create a more active Indian underground?
