i know that we have the swedish sound, the south african, the finnish, the israeli, the south american etcetcetc

i'd like to hear what ya'll consider "our" sound!!

personally, i think it leans towards the forest-y thing, but i'd like opinions.

It's an interesting question that I enjoy thinking about. However, my conclusion has been that there is no "American sound," and I think that's a good thing. Avoids conformity/cliche/stagnation. Of course, the geographic areas known for a particular sound tend to be a lot smaller than the United States.           http://soundcloud.com/herbert-quain

i'll buy that.
i know that the asheville crew tend toward the neo-goa and deep (mainly cause of annunaki and the others in that vein)

my own folks move towards the heavy bass forest and dark

i know that neuro is super popular with some in the ATL/SC/NC scene, but i haven't messed around with them....

aren't the Brooklyn folk into the higher energy?

the USA is larger than europe! You expect us to have one sound?

I think people associate San Francisco with silly stoner trance--lots of comedy samples and absurd sounds (not that all SF producers are like that).

Like this:

or this:

or a more recent example:

Kind of a laid back, cruisin' sort of vibe that's a little bit more fun than the british style and not quite crazy rockstar like israeli style fullon.

ummmm, a little bit of everything....but if i had to say, the common thread is transcendent psychedelia tending towards a quicker tempo

Id say... Um...

One part sheer utter psychedelic insanity

one part burning man

one part high technical standard

1/2 part Detroit tech

1/2 part Chicago house

3 parts antiestablismentarianism

and a healthy dose of good ol fashioned Spirit of Resistance to Confinement Within Convenient Easy to Swallow Well Defined Conformity

and some hippies...

and some ravers....

and some nerds...

and some punks...

and some just-plain-musicians...

and some normal folks...

some not so normal folks...

some technicians...

some spectators...

some hecklers...

and some downright, doggone, bona fide, roughneck, DIY-or dont individualists who in my opinion represent the modern incarnates of the true American spirit that dont take shit from nobody and do it ourselves cuz no one else does it better.           .

^ this is dance. thx.

also, goddamn, i think you just single handedly motivated me to get back on the throwing parties wagon. i'd considered quitting cause i get very little support in my area, but doggonit, if i don't do it no one will!!!

yeah i feel ya on the little support tip, I think Im the only serious trancer in Reno, tho i know a lot of people who are into it. Ppl here hear 'trance' and images of Tiesto dance in their heads to accompanying supersaw superverb synths. This town is stupid for dubstep, no shit. Though I was VERY pleased to see, not half a block from the Reno ARch itself, a marquee with Shpongle at the top of the list. Which is nice. Psytrance tho in this town usually is associated with Burning Man, whihc is cool but sort of glosses over the greater trance world. Burners are good ppl but they jsut want to party, dont really care so much about the soundtrack or the whole idea of the trance dance.

I helped get people together to throw a good trance party a while back and for 8 hrs solid we rocked the woods west of town, Flak and Gypsy annihilated minds, some locals showed off, and it was great right til the forest service showed up. So worth the fines tho, just seeing how Sound Guy, Genny Guy, and CDJ Guy (and DJ Guys and a DJ Gal and a certain DJ Israeli Motormouth who wont be named) all came together with their contributions and made a party out of nothing, for the cost of the generator fuel. The damn cops showed up right as i was walking to the dj booth to start my set... Jerks. And they called it a rave.           .

i feel your pain brother.
we put together the first psytrance renegade this area has seen for many many years, and all the people that came to it were like "durrh, you got any dubstep?"

then the cops showed up around 3am with shotguns......
other than that, we throw bar shows and the like and get maybe 10-20 people. most of the people that are into psy around here are just party kids that like chemicals a bit to much, and play shit neuro instead of the brainbending deep that the real heads like....

we had a small gathering in carthage, mo..very small town in sw corner of the state;; bands and edm inside the "club" ((large rundown tin building bar on the edge of town)) and out back in the woods we had a psy stage..at one point during the evening a few officers from the sheriffs department pulled up, they were really cool about everything, just wanted to do a walk-through of the grounds which we obliged..as were walking away from the psy stage a deputy turns with a very perplexed look on his face and asks me "so... what kind of techno was THAT? thats different from the techno inside..its..just different"
