That plastic, over-produced sound

Note: This is not another thread discussing merits or non-merits of full-on.

Whenever I listen to artists like 1200 mics, Alien Project etc, I always find they have the same extremely crisp (to a fault), over-produced sound that just sounds plastic and fake to me. All their track seem to have the same annoying snare drum/percussive line sound, and the same groupings of instruments and frequencies. Infected also has this sound on a few of it's CV songs, and most of I'm the Supervisor.

I mean, I quite like that style of production, but I really think it's being overused when every single act has the same production sound. I think the sound of one's production should be as much a signature of the artist as the tune itself, as opposed to a whole group of artists sounding like they all graduated from GMS university.

Equally annoying is people who think that that sort of sound is some sort of nirvana of production, and that anyone who doesn't sound that needs to mix or EQ better. I think this genre should be more about creativity, both in the style of songs, and the way they are produced.

Discuss.

Totally agree,
In pop music they realized many years ago that if you actually make everything perfectly balanced and polished it will sound dead and make peoples ears fall asleep.
Compared to much fullon, Britney and Madonna can have much more rough and lively production manytimes.

Which is of course a bit of a sad state of affairs for the trance scene.
But I hope the same awareness will come in the trance scene of what really makes a production sound interesting... perfect balancing of levels and careful EQ'ing to make sure that you get no phase issues or masking is for sure not the key.
Ask any mainstream producer and he will tell you that the rules of sound engineering is more there to be broken than followed.

I want more leads sloppily EQ'es so they clash a bit with the bass sometimes, unsquashed sounds getting masked by each other in an organic way and sounds coming in to loud or quiet sometimes.
Thats what makes the music sound alive in my ears anyway.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

plastic sound is the way ( not!!!! ) ....... listen to pop listen to hip hop . listen to house listen to fu$$ing linkin park.
its all the same. over compressed . flat in the face.
its the sounf of the 2000 . and it will change.
it just takes time.
now days most music is produced to be as loud as possible and that plastic sound is a part of it.

if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...

Very true!

This was the reason for me to start the LO FI Massaker project.

Psychedlic hardcore sounds that are not overproduced and going new ways of twisting peoples minds.

Check out the first promo, that is a disturbing hardcore mix, into ur mind, here:

the character of the sound is the signature of the artist.
if the artsit has no the signature - he is anonymous.

his creation has a sounds but no sound.

but who cares? it is the product for the masses.

masses like the repetitiveness - it gives comfort and safety.

it is like macdonald or cocacola. pure plastic.

so tell now to the 1.0000000000000000000000 mass trance lovers "don't buy this plastic shit maybe this will shake them"...impossible.
