i used to download much music during napster days and audiogalaxy as well. i 've always been buying tho, getting it for free wasnt a reason for me to stop spending money on cd's. the bad situation of the music industry all around and not-being-able-to-catch-sleep-with-those-hd's full-of-music i stopped using it and slowly re-buy all the music i like. nowadays i download electro stuff to check out as i dont really know yet what i like in this genre and what i dont. so for all, shahars rule is a good line to walk at. cheers

I used to download music as well. Now I can't say that everything I have downloaded I have bought, but I make it a point to buy something as often as I can. Not only to support the artists and the labels, but for the sheer fact of supporting the scene in general. As a dj, I wasn't really hard core into searching for the unreleased, but I was always down to check out artists that I had never heard of before or what I had heard from them wasn't something I liked. An example would be Fungus Funk. When I first heard his stuff on the first Acidance compilation, I thought it sucked. It took someone hooking me up with a cd that had stuff that either wasn't released yet or would never be released for me to change my opinion on him. Now anything he does, I buy. For a lot of the little known artists, that is the same. Who outside of Hungary would have known about ParaHalu??/ They still haven't released anything yet, but you hear about how good they are all the time from people around the world. How do you think that happened?

I am now an artist, making my own music. I make it a point to have one or two of my tracks available on the internet... I do have some things coming out on a couple of labels, but for those tracks I am intelligent. I DONT GIVE THEM TO ANYONE!!!! The only cats that have them are the Label owners.

Without the internet, I would probably still be listening to jungle and would have long ago abandoned being a dj or producer. Does it mean I still download? No, but if I was unintelligent enough to let someone get their hands on something they weren't supposed to, sucks to be me.

When it's all said and done IMHO, the main focus as an artist is to have lots of people listen to their music. It would be nice to get paid for it, but I don't make music for money. I make music because I want it to be shared with others not just in the immediate area that I live in, around the world.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Hey all you people at the Isratrance forum.
I´m a well known DJ/Artist in the psytrance scene and I´m also a member of this forum since quite some time.
I choose to write this under a fake name because I simply don´t know how it would affect my carier.
It seems like most people in this forum are very much against trading and downloading and that the general attitude is that DJs should not play them at all.
What I would like to cast some light upon is that mp3s are everywhere in this scene and most DJs do play them.
Even if you´re a big name DJ you don´t have access to ALL music, so of course it´s very tempting even for us to download some new promostuff before a gig.
Now, most DJs won´t admit this of course but trust me, I travel all over the world and meet artists and DJs and I swap alot of music with other DJs and it´s A LOT of mp3s going around!
So, ok, my tracks don´t sell as well as they did 4-5 years ago, but my music and my name is spread all over the world and I get much more bookings since the filetrading got so big.
I know it´s got a backside as well, bad sales for the labels, bad money for artists and so on.
But I can only say that it helped my carier and a lot of other artists.

See u out there,

PEACE
kaniz

While I am slowly trying to buy more CDs to support the producers I really do enjoy, if it was not for file trading, 90% of the stuff I listen to now, I would of never even heard of if it wasnt for sites such as soulseek, audio galaxy.

Soulseek espcially really acted as a launching point for introducing me to alot of psytrance and discovering new artists/producers/etc.

The upside of filetrading, is exposing people to new music they wouldnt of heard of otherwise, as more people get exposed to it, more people may start buying it, then there is the fact it also creates demand for certian artists/etc to come play in a city/area as more people learn about them.

True, CD sales may go down, but as mentioned above, the bookings/etc go up.

I try and support what I can, but being a student and in debt, I cant buy nearly as many CD's as I'd like do try and get a new CD or two a month though.

Nice topic!!!

I live in Bulgaria.
I download (and also share) a lot of mp3z nowadays.
There is not a single store dedicated to electronic music here! It's almost impossible to get VISA/Master Card here, since you need at least 500Eu monthlu wage and maybe 90% (I'm not sure about the exact percent) of the working people get up to 150-200Eu/Month...and there's BIG unemployment. Especially ppl under 25 and students...
These problems does not apply to me, but that's just a matter of luck. Almost everyone in the psy-scene here are in the above category - low wages without any chance of getting CC.
Actually there is a way to get psy cds here - some local online shops resell them but the prices are 2-3 times higher (20Eu-40Eu and even more), their catalogs are rarely updated and it takes a couple of months to get your cd.
I dld mp3z mainly to check for something new and interesting or to find some old and rare tracks.
In fact mp3s brought me to the psytrance scene. Some years ago a friend of mine told me "Hey listen to these guys - Astral Projection, they are awesome", he told me also how to find their tracks online...
Then...I was *TOTALLY* keen on their music :]
By that time I still haven't got my own pc, so I had maybe 2-3 cds with mp3z (something like archive lol) and 9-10 audio cds. A few months ago I had my first pc with 55.6k modem I doscovered psynews, isratrance (old version) and other related sites, and realized that there is enormous amount of artist which realesi in the same style (and I actually learnt that a style, called "psytrance" exists) so I decided to check their music (by that time I knew only Astral, MFG, Electric, Hallucinogen & Juno Reactor - only a couple of their tracks).
I downloaded maybe 2-3gb mp3s from AG...not more than 2-3 track from each artist and I was amazed how different the "psytrance" can be
Now, several years later, I listened to almost every album/compilation which worths to bi listened to. I know a lot of things about a lot of artists and labels. I'm going to parties quite often.
About 10-12 moths ago I decided to start creating my own cd collection. For these moths I've bought 101 releases (albums/compilations/singles) from different artist/years/subgenres...and I'm still not satisfied The biggest problem is that even with 100% legal VISA/Master Card most of the online shops just don't want to operate with ppl from such a country:( I understand them...a lot of ppl here (not in the psy-scene, but generally) are trying to cheat or to steal CC...some of them succeded and now a lot of sites aren't operating with bulgarian customers. I found only saikosounds.com to be operating, but even with them I spend two weeks to prove that the credit card is legal (I had big luck that the card was issued by german bank, not bulgarian).

So I'm not going to stop downloading and sharing mp3 files, because in my case downloading does not affect my desire to buy originals.
I think the biggest problem for the labels are not the mp3 files, but the mediocore releases or bad label managing.

In a few words: CDs I bought because I heard them in mp3 format - 101
CDs I would buy without downloading mp3 files - 0
In my opinion the effect of mp3s on me was totally positive.

And something else. I don't think that downloading an album rips off the artist/label. It's like promotion for them. Everyone who likes the album enough will order it.
I can't imagine how such an absurd is possible - in the one hand we have the statement of every label "psy scene is dying because of the mp3s" and in the other we have more and more releases and a lot of new labels. It seems to me that some labels are unable to survive the competition and they are blaming the mp3s for their own faults.

I;m sorry about my poor English

I never download... but I have a friend who gives me a lot of music that he downloads because he is part of a small music web-share group with very good music, a lot of it shows up there before its realeased.

the thing is I am a Dj, and was once approached because I was obviously playing unreleased music, and the person seemed to be quite upset with the fact that a Dj was playing unreleased music that was not given to me as promotional.
his reasoning, "since the dj might be making money playing the muisc, then that Dj should be paying the producer for the music by buying it"
I agree with this in some ways, yet I dont think its that simple... him and me had a discussion and both agreed there is a def. catch 22. the problem between producers making money, yet getting a lot of people to listen to their music in the first place because they found it on the net....

about a DJ finding and playing unreleased music.. isnt it kind of the Dj's job to be able to find and get new music and play it for people for the over-all enjoyment of the party?
I think if the DJ is playing downloaded / unreleased music, as long as he is not giving it to other people, then its ok... and most dj's with unreleased stuff arnt going to give it out, so I dont see much of an issue.           www.facebook.com/DjJanux

I cannot believe what I am reading "I promise myself to buy more cd's when I get more money" "I used to download but I quit" "My friend downloads but I dont" What kind of crap is this??? What kind of sorry ass, lame excuse giving, low self esteemed garbage is this?? Why is is so hard for you pussies to accept reality how it is and deal with it!!!

I ONLY download music. ONE MORE TIME FOR ALL YOU ARTISTS AND LABELS AND WHOEVER YOU ARE!!!
I
ONLY
DOWNLOAD
MUSIC!!!
I have amassed a collection of over 100 gigs and I love it!!! Forget soulseek and napster... Lets get serious. Direct Connect will satisfy all your media needs.. the fastest and largest traders in the world convene in that cyber cave!!

Among other things I REFUSE to pay 15 USD for something that costs 2USD to make...
I feel bad for the artists, but what to do??? If your music is good and you work hard, you will earn. Whether its by selling cd's or vinyls, or on the web, or by gigs... Today is is harder than before!!! get CREATIVE BUDDY!!! We all know it!! Deal with it!!! The artists know that mp3 trading is going on... It is no fucking secret... So if you have such a problem with it, do not release it!!! simple as that..

The old record labels who rode the CD wave were making ridiculous profits... Margins that were never heard of in the music industry!! So they got their money, and pumped it back into their little MTV videos and britney spears prototypes and r&B hip hop trash music "all about the benjamins" kind of waste...FOR WHAT??? to get MORE money!!! the result is that Underground movements which are original and innovative like psy trance get hurt and the radio billboards top pop trash of the moments sees the glory. It is a cycle my friends!! Nothing new here!!

Peace!!!

PS. It was just too tempting man...
