For me, when it comes to dividing styles, I see an analogy of food ingredients better than a tree. I guess this is probably because the only thing close to my passion for music is my passion for cooking (and eating) good foods.

Every tune has a variety of flavors or flavorful qualities. Some flavors work well together, some don't. You can cook something with a ton of flavors (full-on), or combine a few perfectly (minimal) that are equally delicious in the mouth. Similar flavors can be combined easily, but sometimes you can combine very different flavors that make something fantastic.

I like it when artists and DJs "cook" or combine unusual flavors that are delicious together. Give me a deep tribal housey percussion with a full-on-esque melody and dub overtones. Gimme breakbeat with thick driving bass and elegant Swedish melodies. A tree can't grow to that, but a cook can make that in the kitchen.

Here is what I consider to be a great example of an artist "cooking" - a remix Jirah made awhile back. It combines elements of full-on, house, prog-trance and is just a general masterpiece at 132 bpm.
http://www.jirah.com/music.html - download "Fallen - Jirah remix" (don't worry...he put it online himself, so it is completely legal for download ).

BTW, for a good "tree" guide to electronic music, check this out. Don't take anything seriously, but it is absolutely hilarious.

Completely agree with you. House + Dub = Yummy. Bass-heavey breaks + melodies = Yummy. Trance + Hardcore still doesn't work for me unfortunately.
Although I play acid techno, which I've heard described as "Hippy Hardcore".           "One nation under a groove".

what is the deal with calling a genre of music progressive. where is it progressing to?from?

it all sounds rediculous and meaningless to me.

there are no labels, no definitions.

listen, play, produce what you love and feel. dont worry about what to ccall it or what group to associate yourself with.           ein chadash tachat hashemesh. there is nothing new under the sun. --kohelet.

I use these names: Goa, Full On, Progressive, Minimal, Tech

Isn't that enough?           Ut ameris, amabilis esto.

Oh it all gets so confusing!

Just give me house, trance, techno, drum n' bass, garage and breaks and I'll work the rest out for myself!

Got given a flyer in Cyberdog last week which listed the music for the night as follows...

Oldskool Rave (OK so far)
Hard Acid (Still OK, play some myself)
DOOMCORE (!?!?!)
Hardcore Techno (Know this one...)
Gabba (Help!)
Speedcore (Really help!)
TERRORCORE!!!!! (WTF?!?!?)

I have no idea what doomcore or terrorcore (or even speedcore) sound like BUT DAMN I WANNA HEAR SOME! TERRORCORE! Just the NAME is enough to make me laugh out loud! It sounds wicked! Where can I get some?

its like 1000 bpm madness. its undanceable.

these are subgenres of hardcore techno. theyre the punks of electronic music. they mosh instead of dance and break everything that comes in their way. some of the music is actually very interesting but whenever the hardcore dj comes on a circle mosh pit develops and i kindly leave the room.

ehh whatever
