Monitoring upgrade !
With that pair of PMC, thoses mackies aren't gonna stay anny longer !
Congrats! How much did they cost?
Regarding the Mackies HR 824s, I have them as well (and a pair of Alesis M1 actives to check mixes on a more "hi-fi" monitor) and although I paid a lot for them when I bought them like 8 years ago and they are considered budget monitors these days, I know them so well that I get mixes spot on pretty fast. I don't see my self selling them, ever.
Im building a 2x 700 watts Hypex amp, with passive monitor level control, and will be tri-wiring them (since there are 3 speakon connexions on each).
I got them with the matching stands for 4500€, without amps, which is a very nice deal !
About the mackies, i know them very well but im tired of their slow bass (at the advantage of been less colored than classic vented bass reflex boxes), and the metallic tweeter can be a little bit harsh sometimes. I found them also to naturally compress the signal, which makes comp tweaking harder at the mastering stage. But overall, yes they are nice monitors for their price, and i will be keeping them until i know the PMC well enough.
Perhaps I will get later some tiny auratones-like speaker, just to better check the midrange balance.
Tri-wiring? Really? You might be asking for more trouble than it´s worth but ok good luck.
Even bi-wiring can be dicy compared to using a proper amp and using a simple hookup. And the Hypex ones are very very good indeed! I am thinking to buy Hypex amps as well, but my knowledge of class-d implementation is rudimentary, so i am not going to build ´em myself even though it is pretty much a paint by numbers thing. I´m sure it will sound angelic though and no doubt pmc´s is a massive upgrade from mackies!
