Ok so in about 7 months I will move from my tiny apartment to my new built house. I currently work at a pro studio but all the guys there want me to spend cash on high end gear which is impossible with 1 baby and no. 2 possible in the next year.

So in the small basement where I will have my studio this is my gear list which some I have and other bits I will buy:

MacBook Pro 15" with Ableton Live, 12Gb RAM. Maybe by a second external screen.
M-Audio Profire 2626
KRK Rokit 5 (can get for $200 a pair from a place in liquidation)
Novation Impulse 49 Midi
Pittsburgh Modular Foundation 2.0
Moog Slim Phatty
TT 303 Bass Bot

And in the next 12-18 months DSI Prophet 12.

Any tips etc?

harrison mixbus(my personal faourite)
i use it for mastering down stems.. no midi only audio...amazing with uad plugins

and only $140

you got a good sprnead of stuff, maybe some external processor.peronal thing

but you need something to finish your tracks on,
ableton ok but you can get a better finish
with some other daw

Before anything else I would definitely suggest acoustic treatment and better monitors than KRK5s. It doesn't make sense to me to spend money on more sound sources until your room and your monitoring situation is optimal for your space.

Also, I don't think you need another daw in order to get a better finish on your tracks. Ableton is definitely enough and IMO the time you would invest in learning another DAW would take away from time you could be spending elsewhere for minimal or arguably no reward.

i agree with willsanquil here!
spend some cash if you can for acoustic treatment and maybe better monitors...

lucky you that you will have your own basement to make it studio...thats great.

Good point, I've got the Pittsburgh already so I'll put the other synths on hold.

I spoke to a bloke today I know who can give me a reasonable deal on some Adam A7x monitors (good reviews, I'll test them out tomorrow).

I also know a bloke who specializes in room acoustic treatment so once I've got things purchased I'll get him in and spend up on appropriate treatment.

I can always buy synths further down the road.

Thanks for the tips.

I was wondering, as I'll be recording live music (drums, double bass, piano etc.), should I invest in a mixer or just get the 2626?

I can vouch for the Adam A7X - been using them for a couple months now and love them to bits!            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

if you want to boost production quality monitors, headphone ,acoutics might help

if you have the cash go in monitors in the kh 0300 range maybe, or adam focals ect are good too but you might upgrade once again later if you are after the holy grail.

also i dont see any fx in your rig for these nice synth to shine

Or if you are on a budget, used Mackie HR 824s Mk1 are very cheap nowdays and go very low.
Not as detailed as the Dynauadio in their mid range, but you can churn out great mixes once you get used to their sound.
But yeah, too many expensive synths, spend a small amount of your budget into decent monitors and acoustics.

on top of that: get a good soundcard maybe not high end but rme or so. also wondering why an extra synth, and not a culture vulture or an other top notch audio treatment box           http://soundcloud.com/vipal

I would not recommend KRK whatsoever, they suck, big time.
Instead switch to PC, get a Lenovo Thinkpad, it'll save you a ton of $ and mine works like a charm, stable enough to run FL10 and do a live set with it. Win 7pro 64 bit and 8 gigs ram and you'll be a happy camper, note that it is cheap and very easy to upgrade Lenovo thinkpads, eg. doubling the ram or exchanging the hdd for an ssd drive...

The switch will save you easily $1000 and you will have Win 7, which is much more stable than any mac os nowadays... the $$1000 in turn you should use to get yourself a pair of Adams A7X monitors, when you have them connected it will feel to you like my god, I can actually really hear what I am doing...

Wait with the moog and prophet, start with software, add an analog compressor, get Zebra, Omnisphere and Diva, along with a couple other software toys and add the hardware later... use some of the money for room treatment (more important than you think, although if you diy you should be able to treat your room for less than $300!

Don't waste your time with m-audio products, they suck as much as the KRK, maybe even more. Instead spend little more $ and get a motu usb soundcard, if you really have enough $ leftover get RME, but motu has rock solid drivers is stable and the ad/da converters are not bad at all...

one more thing, the Adams sound is not necessarily pleasing to the ear, but from what I can tell they translate great to any other sound system (which is what you want), since I have them my production has improved greatly I think...

+1 on adam a7x!

i had the krk's rokit 5 and recently upgrade to adam a7x...i have to say that was the best 920 euro that i spend...
i was between dynaudio and adam and i choose the adam's cause i knew them from a friend of mine who had em and every time i was in his studio it was pleasure to work with...

because is so much money to buy monitors the best way is to see them in action deep first. 1000 euro is much money to spend and you have to be sure what are you doing. at least for me...when your basic month wage is 700 euro (in the best way) and you have to pay bills etc every month well then the situation becomes serious

Yup, it was the case with me as well when I wanted to buy new monitors and upgrade from my Alesis M1 actives.
Went down to Turnkey in London where they had a whole lot of monitors arranged in a room and chose the Mackie HR824s...they were 1200GBP back in 2004.
Wish I had the money to get the Dynaudio BM15A which sounded absolutely amazing and go for about 1500euros, used now days.
The HR 824s go for like 700€ used nowdays.

I ended up keeping the Alesis as well and use them as a secondary, more "hi-fi", reference.
