it also make me think to something i never tried cause to lazy but with converters that are not transparent but flatering a ad/da pass for all plugins would enhance the sound of the mix good times.. even low end converters like the echo mia i had or maybe even audiofire can probably color in a nice way, sweeten the highs, give some depth, smooth digital transients.. it s sure something you dont want when recording great source or monitoring.. but with plugins it could be just the ticket to give them a more real sound

not sure audiofire or other cheap audio interface like that would do any good, in fact i think they are gonna harm the original signal. but i believe there might be a device with more fitting converters. not sure what it is though, as i didn't hear too many converters.

yes they will arm the sound but i think it could maybe be a good thing ,dunno, i m wondering if it can add that 3d dimension that i feel is sometimes lacking in some plugins

just by curiosity i m gonna try tomorow , not even need a tune in fact.. i m gonna try with just a synth bounce vs ad/da pass but i think my converters are not enought colored in fact and the difference will be too minimal...very old soundcard might give more intresting result lol
i have a very old cassette recorder with a line in too bad it s broken would love to try to run somthing into that.

i also have a old hifi amp with eq (maybe analog eq no clue it s from the 70 i think )it could color plugs in a nice way if it have inputs ,it sound very warm ...
it make me think there is probably some gears that is possible to find for nothing that would make our synth sound great.. like old hifi amps, tape/cassete recorder...

also reamping (or i should maybe say just amping in that case )synth work great with good hifi speakers and mic.

i think in some hardware va they add processing at the output, eq curve, little exciter stuff like this maybe.

lol, well i am curious what will u get but if the difference is minimum it is stacking many tracks what makes the big difference. try it at least with kick / bass / lead / pad - just random 4 track mix, 30 sec is fine.

hehe this is more into heavy saturation then subtle converter coloration

tried on a lead the difference is very very minimal ,i did a blind test with abx tester and got 80% correct with the ad/da pass sounding a little better to me than the pure digital bounce, main difference i was lisetning to spot the file was just a little smoother highs less agressive on the ad/da pass and maybe little smother transients cause of this..
but it was a high pass filtered lead, have to try with something more broad band..and if the difference is bigger i will post the file, on that test it didn t worht it cause it was too suble to affect a mix

edit : did a other test and got 40% on abx ..difference are way too sublte , sound almost identical that it was probably my brain tricking me and luck on the first abx test or my ears tired dunno..

i uplaod the bounce if one wanna check and too lazy to redo some..imo dont worht it

re checked and on the 2 lower notes that "pluck" the difference is not so subtle, could be intresting to ear on a full tune ,i think it could sound less in the box and sterile but cut a bit less maybe..
but something i will never try anyway better plug things with tubes and transformers between the ad/da

what i noticed when i did my test i think is the the anti aliasing filter in the converter softening a little the transients, on some converters the filter is also not steep enought on purpose to let some aliasing come back in the highs for a less agressive and more pleasant sound it seems.
imo it could worth it for somone using just plugin to try and do some a/b test depending your converter it might sound better as crazy as it sound .

today converter even lowend are probably way cleaner than the da of some 15 years old synth mate ! i think these are too good for this application
but now i m convinced some hardware va get some of their "magic" cause of the non transparent da.. artifacts can make the sound more pleasing .

the synth programming/sound is too different to really judge, one bright , one dark...i like more the dark one personally..
