Hello Fellow Trancers,

Im just curious to find out information on the legal and non-legal procedures involved in creating a new label to release music..

Would anyone be able to help me get started, or at least get a good idea of the costs involved in getting started.?? What are the steps needed to get the show on the road.? Is it hard to affiliate with a Distribution company?? What about mass production of the cd's, the covers, the mastering?? anything else im forgetting?

What about contracts between the label and the artists?? how much does artists expect for a track??

Any information would be greatly helpfull.. thanks in advance..

I already have a good idea of artists i'd like to have on the Compilation..

Clown if you in Italy so contact Etnica as soon as possible ...........................

ask them all these questions not here ,,,,,,,,,

also contact all labels which will be close to your style

as i know your taste i will be ready to help you out with some shit inside of Israel ...............

cool.. thanks mate.. im not living in Italy unfortunatly, im from Montreal, Canada.. and if i play my cards right, this could be the first Montreal psy label, besides Accend (which released the Nuclear Ramjets albums)...

Thanks for your support mate.. this label will most probably lean towards techtrance and minimal progressive

There are not many people i can contact from montreal, thats why i posted here.. and i don't want to bug other labels just yet, im going to leave it up to them to choose wheither they would like to help me out with this or not.. i do hope they will, because im serious about this project..

I know not much about it, but you can let produce complete cds (cd, cover and all that stuff) in massproduction at several firms via internet.

And in germany we have to get a trade licence for running a label, i don't know if you have to in canada.

i think that way what you need to release CD

musicians
sound makers
promoters
distributor

musicians you can take by your own , also count me as artist

sound makers - search in yellow pages for sound design studio and call all around Monreal , see what they offer and how much money
pick one

promoters

1.dj's around the globe , make much as you can connections with forgein ppl , offer them many things like : free cd's ,help in organization of label/non label parties , plays , also sign them check their skill before

2.listeners , offer them something that they won't regret to help you will promotion aka free cd's , free enterance to parties ................

Distributor - contact Cosmophilia and Wirikuta(if i spell well)

as i said contact every label in your kind
Zenon , Tubo Trance , Boshke Beats , G+ , Ddrum , Nova Tekk , Global Trance Network , ZMA , Moonflower , Horns and Hoofs , Spirit Zone , Plastic Park , Sub Machine ................

ask them for help and those who will answer make good alliance with them build on help me i will help you .............................

Canada is pretty fresh land for this kind of music so maybe you will have luck but never never do mistakes ............. think 100 steps forward ........

do not sign all stars

find two or three stars and then move to newbies ,which will probably will be your label's future because all stars never success in wrong label .........................

advice you to look for Loom from switzerland and martin bitrik from Germany (not sure) for minimal

make connections with everybody , be nice and active ..............................

go to Taxes Charge Goverment Structure and sign your label as business before you start to deal with money ...............

think about clubs connection , radio , dj's ,

many thingssssssss

Wow. thanks everybody.. you people have been really helpful, especially Sektor.. i think i have enough information to see what direction to take.. A couple of labels have already contacted me, and a couple of artists as well. i didn't think people would be this helpful honestly, and i can't find words to express my gratitude towards all that will help this out with this project.

I will keep those who are interested updated with any new developments.. but im sure this project will take a while before it lifts off the ground.. we need a plane first

I did it all wrong. On that note, DON'T:
- release old school Goa
- on vinyl
- without a lot of money to burn

Lesson learned!

on the other hand, I can't complain having made my little contribution to my hobby of choice (and I don't mean psytrance - I mean vinyl collecting)...

like did you register the company?? declaire the loss (or gains).. and stuff like that...

Yeah, you can get a company registered (but not incorporated) pretty cheap in Ontario at least... and then you can write off a ton of things off for the business... new computer, any cds you buy, etc, so there's some more money back if you're spending it already... you put your expenses/profits into your taxes and it all works out. It really helps to pay for an accountant at tax time - you can find one to do the trick at a good rate if you can scour up some good recommendations... beyond that, contracts are important, got any lawyer buddies? There are a few templates on the net for record label stuff if you scope around but, universally, they all seem to screw over the artist bigtime. Why anyone signs that kind of thing just boggles me, but then again I'm an idealist, not a business guy. So consider those the basics and do some more detailed research

and have lots of money. And don't expect to make it back for the first several releases. And seriously consider if you'd want to invest your time and money in this instead of say, building up a studio...

i don't want to build a studio, because there's about as much creativity that comes out of me, as lets say, a pencil that's not sharpend.. hehehe..

There's still hope (if i ever get sharpend), but lets just say the sharpener is broken for the time being.. hehehe..

The most important thing Clown is to have a lot of money to spend on the whole label story and have something serious and innovative in mind for your company.

If you just want to have a label just for being called a 'label owner' then please dont do it for yours and the scenes sake.

If you have new ideas in mind and willing to spend a lot of money and time for the whole project then do it mate.

Well, if by new idea's, you mean tracks that i like, I will be innovative, because i have such varied tastes.. Or maybe you mean release the same old full-on sounds or something.. im not sure... but don't worry, i want to release stuff more dark and progressive (inteligent music), maybe with electro sounds in the music..

and by "just being a label owner" you mean not releasing anything, then don't worry, i want to release great music to share with the world.3

And i dont think it costs THAT much.. or so i've heard..

What does Exposure Productions release??
Thanks for the advice, i will keep all this in mind before making my final decision..
