There's an annual 3-4 day fest over NYE called Prism which is as close as we have to a mega fest.. 3000-4000 people.. amazing lineups every year. highly recommended!

amazing if you live in durban maybe....but for an international party punter the line ups are never really great with one, or at a push two international (not from south africa)acts.....

i've been to plenty of parties in plenty of countries and i still think prism rates very high up there.. i dont care about international artists, i want good music.. and i've always heard good music. last time i went was sworn, phyx, hydraglyph, protoculture and many more class SA acts.. forgive me if i like SA music. besides, its more about that venue for me..

also, fuji, the person asked for a big festival around xmas. do you have a better suggestion, or will you actually agree with something someone says for once

I think anything is possible... need a group of right minds.. and sponsors from companies like Sony to beer stuff you have their... turning this festival into a VISUAL INSTALLATION festival, with the added bonus of psy music and chill, prog.... keeping it simple with 2 areas... getting the sound system could be tricky... and for local approval could be something one should really get onto... but you use this idea to get support from Europe. why now.. beautiful land like this!!

I know of some high people down there.. well up here now.. because of governmental problems during the 90's... but i think they could give good loop holes...

Anyway.. what happened to Ashanti?

I have not been on this forum for ages -

But this is the right place to put a question like this out there.

I think, to be honest, the biggest problem is guaranteeing the numbers - the S.A trance tap is limited in the number of drops that it contains. Everyday tho, more Capetonians (esp) are turning on to trance and the outdoor parties.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to maintain a 'club' environment for various reasons and gone are the days when we could party until 7am/8am in town.

For this reason, more and more people are starting to look towards trance.

But you put on a 4 day festival, you need big names, awesome decor, big venue etc and even marketing internationally, with an international partner will not gaurantee that it's a success.

The bottomline is that it costs the average person between R9000.00 and R12,000.00 to fly here - that's like a $1000/900Euros or more! Just to fly here - no lineup that we offer here can pull Europeans at that price, when they can get the same (or better) in Germany, Spain etc for a fraction of the price.

Our problem is location - geography.

And I think it's why SA will never be the No1 trance destination. PERIOD! No other reason!

Food for thought.

I'm not the definitive authority on everything trance - in fact not on anything trance. Just my point of view.

The thought of a big commercial psy trance festival make me feel horribly ill - even if it was possible, who needs it? who wants it?

Over-commericalism killed the rave party scene up here in Joburg, ok not psy but it used to be good before the commercial punters jumped on board made if big and milked it dry. The great thing about psy parties is that they are off the commercial radar, please lets keep it that way or else it will die.

Yeah and Cape Town has some of the best outdoor events you could wish for, wether its 200 or 2000 peeps its all good

Anyhow all and any growth should be organic, let the promoters and organiser focus on QUALITY and not QUANTITY, as most of them are doing. Any big time schemers will see their backsides preferably sooner than later.

I have to agree with zatitude.

You should consider yourself lucky while you still don't have huge "festivals", which translates into huge mindless crowd and pop music.

So my opinion is that you should value more what you have, your own artists, party people and vibe. No one needs big line ups, that's a fact... Goa never had big line ups and everyone says the vibe was awesome... In fact, Goa never had a Live Act, all that vibe was provided mostly by unknown DJs. So all you need is people with good taste and discernment. You seem to have two of the most important things: good location and a non-spoiled crowd.

If what matters the most is the music you don't need "big international acts", some unknow DJs may play any released tune from any act.

Believe your ears (music), not what the marketing is trying to make you swallow... A lot of people say "Brazil rocks" and "Brazil has awesome huge parties" because of the huge parties with huge line ups... But the fact is that I can't go to parties here because the crowd is shit, the music is all the same "world wide famous top acts" because they attract money.

Don't be trapped by illusions, find joy into your own way.

well said Full_On, thats exactly the ticket!

the reason there aint massive cheese fests, sorry i mean raves, sorry i mean 'mega festivals' has everything to do with a weak Rand, being miles away from the rest of trancedom, not being able to charge upwards of R500 for entrance to parties due to average earnings and not having a bigger scene across SA.

still the vibe on Cape Town trance floors is second to none.
Cape Town party people really dont have much to worry about at all, they're getting quality trancing time and time again.

altho for my liking a little bit more involvement from party people by adding to the party rather then just being spectators would be nice! just adds a little more spice when people are dressing up, making chai tents, themed camps, traders putting real effort in to their stalls, etc
we'll get there, it's all part of the process.

a warmer ocean would have helped on the destination stakes tho..

Been to a few parties here and there and although my SA involvement has mainly been just with one organisation I reckon the outdoor scene in South Africa contains some of the better parties out there.

As the saying goes, it's not how big it is, it's what you do with it that counts

BTW Here in the UK, Nano's own cheese fest, sorry I mean rave, sorry I mean 'mega festival' was ROCKING this year despite the weather, so you can have your cake and eat it too.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

For Europeans, this location is an advantage! When it is cold and snowing up here in the North, we can get back to summer again...

It`s a pity the scene's numbers can`t expand to other towns.
