I actually agree with you Caligula,

Was just trying to show the flipside.

I also find that you really settle into a serious party groove after about day 4 and then its totally blissed out. Then , as you say , you know the artists you like and you save your ears and energy for them.

Anyway , there is still one thing thats hindering the scene in SOuth Africa , and luckily its only a matter of time before it is sorted out.

Why is the trance scene so massively focused on Cape Town ?? OK - I dont want an answer to this , its my opening statement. The scene needs to be as big everywhere as it is in Cape TOwn.

Right now we have the problem that DJs or artists come from overseas and there is not enough of a national trance infrustructure to support them doing a proper tour of the country. Normally , you`d go to Europe , Japan , or Brazil ( to name just a few ) and be able to play at least 5 gigs on one plane ticket , making it seriously worthwhile for promoters to bring artists and for artists to WANT to come over.

Why hasnt trance spread over the country at the level that its at in CT ? I suppose it suits the CT lifestyle and all , but C`mon! There are so many places in SA where the locations would be magical for parties! I for one am a bit pissed off that the shit aint happenin` across the country , showcasing the beautiful natural diversity of the land!

So something more important for people to think about, is not whether international party-goers will come to a big festival in SA , but if there were a big killer festival up country somewhere , would the CT crowd be willing to travel up there and help support the growth of the scene in other areas of their OWN country?

Further up-country needs big thrashing parties to show them what its all about and that its possible to have them in their areas too. Maybe some seriously rich and forward thinking trance promoters from CT need to consider this. There are a lot of issues here regarding corporate sponsorship etc. that need to be adressed too.

If this ever happens and happens well , i guarantee you that the state of trance , the amount of artists coming over , and the possibility for major festivals will improve dramatically ( and then we can also be prepared for the downside this brings hehehe).

Take brazil for instance , you can go to a trance party any night of the week , and on the weekend there are at least 10-15 big parties nationwide on a given night. And then there are festivals as well. Everytime i`ve walk through the airport here i`ve bumped into at least two djs or artists who are going in or out. Comparable to SA? Not quite , and its perfectly understandable why its more popular as a trance tourist destination.

Solution? Wider dispersion of parties across SA. Nuff said.

some awesome points bru....i do think you are right to ask woudl the CT trancekops be willing to travel up country and i rate the answer would be no, which is a pity...i think its hard tho to compare a place like SA to that of Israel (just for example) due to the size of SA, travelling from CT to say JHB is a bit of a mission, however, maybe in some neutral venue in the Karoo by a mountion and a lake, or something like that....(ala Burning Man might work...

it boggles my mind as to why the trance scene hasnt taken off in places like Kwa-Zulu natal....

thats why i said , before any such huge mega festival could take place in SA.....a serious amount of foreplanning and laying down of infrastructure would have to occur

Solution:

Cheap flights to South Africa!!

speaking as a Europeel ~ it costs approx 1000 of your African Rands (max) for me to fly return to anywhere in Europe!!! ( and that includes change for a carton of smokes in duty free & a bottle of Jack)
... it cost approx 7000 of your Rands to fly to Z.A.

... so... the fact that the Psytrance scene is made up primarily of 'Skint Hippys'

Its all pretty self explanatory to me (It takes a Millenium party or Total Solar Eclipse to justify that expenditure to fly to Z.A for a Trance Party)....

IMO

Exactly what i was thinking.

I would more than happily travel to z.a. for a festival without a doubt, if the flights were cheaper..
So i am unfortunally, and do i dare to say "for now", skint hippies.

i have been coming over to za for the last three years for the partys, but have to say that i fined the music is getting hectic very fast and full on ! the scene is growing to fast and people trying to out do each other ! This year i got out of cape town and as soon as origin was over and headed to natal were there is a small but growing scene ! the music being played is amazing and the partys r how they used to be chilled and fun ! no machine gun trance ! Partys i am shure will grow and a growing number of the cape town scene is filtering up there plus in the winter you still have warm weather perfect for partys ! ! But as some one has said already why should all us european's travel all the way to africa if the ct scene cant evern travel their country to go a party ! I will still be coming back to the south africa every year but not because of the partys but because of the people and am very keen to get things going on the other side of the country ! and for the person who asked why no one is doing massive festivals in africa, the answer is they have already be and done south africa ever heard of rustler festival to name one ! years ago that was one of the bigest trance venues on the scene for africa and abroad all the big names have played there ! not saying south africa has been done but people have moved on to brazil etc ! Think it would be amazing if some one did get round to doing a huge party but not in cape town !

there is hope at hand tho , as far as SA parties are concerned for those of you who are looking for something different from the commercial norm.......

will keep posted as things begin to kick off

You know.... you play a set of music at a party.... then people tell you... "you know what... your set was great!".. then i tell them "yeah.. i slotted one or two of my own tracks in there"... then they say.. "Oh... I didn't hear any difference.... they must've been good if they sound like everything else..." .... eish.... i'm still trying to figure out if i'm more disappointed in myself... or the mediocre expectectations of others.

duh dude - obviously they talking about production!
when i first started making tracks, if i slotted one into my DJ set, ppl would have said afterwards "oh yeah, i heard which track was yours... cos it sounded like shit!"

when ppl tune that, they just mean you've reached a level of production quality that sounds (to them at least) ready for release... they not listening to how 'original' (i hate that word) or 'out there' your music is....           _______________________

but back on topic...

i think a trance 'mega' (?) festival would be cool...

obviously we wouldn't get enough ppl to cover costs of lots of internationals, but 2 or 3 internationals and about 40 locals, over about 4 or 5 days... we could do it!!

well.. we kinda do - the New Years party is usually about 4-5 days, and at least 2 internationals??

there's not really much good internationals - a 5 day festival with all our locals would be killer.. you just need a good venue.

Best party i've been to so far was the Alien 10yr Anniversary... it was a 3 day that we stretched to 4 days, but another day or 2 would have been great...

It was pretty much on par with last years Full Moon Festival for quality...

not gna read thru all that stuff, but who's gna pay min. R5000 for a tranceparty? planeticket etc. that is...

i battle even with considering paying R250 for a ticket alone. the prices are a joke, quite frankly. less bum for more buck

....bit of a late response but,

I feel both Caligula and broken toy's points are valid and blame the event organisers for for this and not the producer who plays on the night. DJ/Live act line-ups are like conducting an orchestra of emotions throughout the event. Event organisers are very careless sometimes and work off name rather than the emotion of sound.

...It's got to flow and keep the crowd intersted....
If you the dancer gets board don't blame the guy behind the decks as he is merely there because he was asked to be there....

With regards to throwing a huge event in SA, CT I think cost is the biggest factor to the follower and thus way to risky to produce for the organiser.

Yo guy's Dont forget the fact that the people in south africa are 99% not interested or too poor to go to the party's so it's really a matter of infrastructure as well. I mean we are the ONLY country in africa with an area on this forum so by african standards the scene is huge. What about the Solipse Festival in Zambia that was mad. But where people from all over africa going there? What about the reggae scene maybe linkups there would mean more than just (whitey heavy metal fuck you I'm rich because of aparthied so now I will have a party while you suffer music?)Or kwaito or Hiphop it's gonna get scarey and messy for sure but mayb we can lift it up a bit?

I am sure there could be some kind of market overseas for safari trance party's but we are fighting a hectic system run by big monsters who don't want a bunch of crazy people making a mess scareing the shit out of the animals and just being annoying in general. BUT is that really what trance is all about?

It's a mess.

The people who are doing important spiritual work in the country need to be supported by the trance community. But this whole dark evil fuck the world mentality make them walk away in disgust. I think that those kind of vibes are common enough already if you want to be a sell out and destroy the country thats your choice but I don't like all the hipocricy that i see sub dividing and breaking apart and real chance we have of doing something about the emergency that the planet is in.

I don't think we need to have cheesy fluffy love the world shit either just a bit more balance focus and direction. All these spaced out people are doing nothing to change the planet but if we get together with a real and focused intent we can change everything.
