While discussing this party on the SFbay604 list, this particular topic kind of exploded today...
The general consensus was that as it is late summer in one of the hottest, DRIEST years on record, having a big bonfire is probably a really, really bad idea, and that even with a dedicated fire-tending crew, the risk for wind-blown embers that land in distant unwatched areas is really high.
We cannot get away with the same kinds of fires that Oregon parties can, and fire risk conditions are at their absolute worst in California right now.
A great many of us are hoping you reconsider for the safety of everyone at the party and in the surrounding area. Even if the fire stays under control and nothing bad happens, it just means you got lucky this time... having summertime bonfires pretty much anywhere in CA aside from the barren desert is asking for trouble.
Apparently several fires broke out at the Red Marines party last month... and that was next to a lake!

I appreciate your concern for the forest and everyone's safety but there will be a fire at the event which has been fully cleared by the owner. No personal fires are allowed or smoking while walking around and film canisters will be available for butts. Fire extinguishers and water buckets will be around the property including a 300 gallon tank next to the XLR8R which is being dug 3 feet deeper to reach the autumn water table. Hardwood is being used to minimize sparks and the crew's constant attention assures any potential fire problems will be quickly handled. Additionally there has been some rain there recently which comfortably reduced the danger according to the owner. Next time you have a concern I would appreciate being contacted directly rather than publicly broadcasting to enlist support for your position.

If that is the case, it certainly sounds like you are better prepared than the last few events that had fires. Are you not on the sfbay604 list? If not, you should be, a large percentage of your target audience is. I can repost your response there if you aren't on the list, a fair amount of people were concerned.
Best of luck with what looks to be a doozy of a shindig, I don't have a car that can make the 11 hour drive unfortunately so I'll have to miss it... unless Arahat feels like swinging by Santa Barbara on his way north....

I sincerely hope the owner, the promoter, and those responsible for the XLR8R will take everyone's thoughts and concerns into consideration....I'm very much looking forward to an amazing event.
Meta- hope you find a ride! It would be great to see you there!
Also, I wanted to put the word out that Eg-bot and I travelling all the way from the east coast are looking for a ride up north, preferably in the early evening. We will be arriving at noon on Friday in San Francisco. Will pay gas etc etc. Please PM me if you can help!

Meta, Santa Cruz is a bit out of the way, but if you can get a ride to somewhere close off of the 580 or in SF, we might have room for ya.
My goal is to stay on the 580 and take San Rafael bridge to 101, but a pitstop in the city could work if you can get there by saturday morning.
Call me tonight or tomorrow night. My spaceship departs San Diego sometime before Midnight Friday with hopes to reach SF by just after sunrise, hit the party in the early afternoon on saturday, got a nice long 14 hour drive ahead of us, ugh.
but, unlike burning man which is the same distance, a lush green forest awaits us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
