"sorry we cant pay you (the full amount)...we lost money"

This is a common line heard from promoters when us djs and artists ask for our agreed upon payment. In fact im getting damn sick of hearing it, i been getting it so much lately...and im sure im not alone. So i would like to hear other peoples thoughts in this matter. In my opinion the promoter must pay the artist what was agreed. If i work for a business and that business is having a rough patch and is making a loss i dont expect my wages to decrease. So it goes the same with this trance business (well it should anyway). If the promoter really has no money left to pay from his own personal pocket money then he should not put parties on in the first place.

This is why u should ask for half of the gig money in advance. If you feel they are not serious, even dare to ask for the whole payment in advance.

Organizers should always know there's a chance they will loose money and be prepared for that possibility. Paying the artist is the minimum you could do. If it wasn't for the music there would be no party. You agreed on a price, the artist came and did his job. It's not his fault people didn't come.

This is what happens when everybody thinks they can make a party.           Majority is never right!

i guess one learns from experiences............if uve been scammed in the past by organisers it is only logical to prevent such an event from occuring in the future by demanding payment/partpayment before performing....hence if its happened to u time and time again ure the one to blame----- respect           At the end there is a DOOR & waiting for you on the other side of that door is either HEAVEN or HELL

i thought that only happens to "small time" DJ's like me.....

promoters think they can run a 'risk free' business....
well U CANT the fact u didnt do your job properly(not enough people, too many friends that dont pay to come in,police, sound or generator prob' etc)is not the DJ's fault...belive it or not some people DJ for a living and work very hard on there set....live...whatever it is.
in our small scene there is trust that is beeing exploided by some unproffesional people...this should stop! and sadley i think what u guys offerd is the only way to ensure payment.....ADVANCED PAYMENT....and my little add on to that is make sure the advanced is somthing u can live with even if u wont get the second part of the payment.....
"SAD BUT TRUE"

cheers.

p.s i thought its my pretty face that gets me fucked like that hehehehe          "....or is it???"

I am organising parties for something like 3 years and during this time i only once didnt payed an artist and that was because the police busted an event.Hopefuly the artist understood the situation and never complained to me.

I remember in my very first party with Spirallianz that the party didnt managed to break even and the next day i went to the bank and withdrew something like 1500 euros in order to pay the artists.

Conclusion : A professional promoter always must have money at his place or at the bank just in case the party doesnt break even in order to pay the artists and everyone else, otherwise like Sensient said, instead of organising parties he can stay at home and watch television and eat pizza.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

it happens a lot.... too much
to well known artists just as to begginer djs
I think that it is unexeptable when a promoter says that to an artist that was brought from abroad,
i also think that on the domestic level we djs should show understanding to the orgeniser's situation and if we see the party is in a loss then charge less. I rather take less money and see the orgeniser do another party than see the poor dude bankrupt and out of the orgenising business. afterall this is our scene and we djs are a part of it and should show understanding when thing dont go according to plan.

i disagree Guy regarding the diffrence between domestic and dj's from abroad.

if u work - you get paid, no ifs, ends or buts.

from what i ve seen and experienced local djs always end up being payed less when there is a problem...
one way around this is to make contracts signed by both parties before the event. this allows everyone to know what to expect. in the contract you include everything from the amount to be paid to the amount of drinks etc.
then if the party fucks up its down to the artist s dicretion whether or not to ask for full fee or reduced arrangement.
surrender: you re right !everyone who works
should be paid, but generally if you re local, you most probably know the organisers, so it makes it harder to ask for full fee. in my opinion anyways.

It's the party it self a payment enough.
Leaving the abuse out,
if you can see by your self that the party isn;t goin well the artist could be satisfied with the transport/accomodation cost, having in mind how small this scene ist.

I through my self since 98 party's and i still havent invited a international artist caus i fear that i will not have the money to pay.

i know one thing
if somebody booked you he need to pay you.it is bussines--this is prof.nothing else in this isuue.
you booked artist/d.j--even if you lose money---possible that the person flight/spent money for you in a way/change his plan and i don't know what so you need to get the full money as it promised to you.
i belive even in the full amount in advence--the best thing...it is like if the organize will make more money ,so what?will it will pay to the artist more than they agreed?i don't think so so to get paied what you need to get this is the way that it sopose to be

Your responsibility as an artist/dj is to go and put on a good show. It is the promoter's responsibility to ensure that they can make their money, by bringing enough people in and keeping good finances, making a budget, etc. If a price has been agreed upon by both parties then it should be honoured except in special circumstances where non-payment is mutually agreed upon.

What I'm sick of is how you can get a bad reputation for wanting to get paid your due. Or how a promoter, once they fail to pay you once, simply won't book you again if you show any problem with not being paid. What are ya gonna do - ream them out online to ruin their rep? First of all, people going to the parties almost always care only about how good the party is - not whether anyone gets paid or not. Secondly you'll surely have a batch of folks telling you ya have a "bad attitude" and that if the promoter wants a better choice, book them, and they'll play (burnt mp3s) for free. You're just never right in these situations... all you can really do is live & learn - not get paid once, just don't take that booking again, or with out-of-town gigs simply require an advance.

It's as if a substantial portion of DJing is simply taking shit with a smile. All just to share music with people... what a hassle it can be

Im very sorry to hear this is happening to you Tim.. In the dj business, its the same old stories all the time.. i don't even fuss about pay anymore, because im almost sure im always gonna get that line "sorry, we lost money, no pay for you"...

i threw a party.. we had the money in envelops BEFORE the party started.. we were ready to take the drop..

promotors depends on ticket sales WAY to often to finance there parties.. while it should be financed from there job (or drug money lol)..

whatever, this will not stop some time soon.. just get the promotors to sign a contract, stating the amout your supose to get paid.. then if they don't pay, sue them for twice as much. . hahaha

good luck with this matter.. and best of luck with Permutations..           "VA - REWIRED" OUT NOW !! (techtrance invasion) ---> http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/86303/forum/9
