Some friendly thoughts on NYC Trance Parties

These are my personal ideas and observations i mean no offence to anyone, just expresing my views on something that is important to me.

Requests - Remember when DJ's took requests? That was fun. It can get confusing but that really makes a difference, maybe there could be like a "total request hour" or like “amateur track hour" where people in the crowd bring CD's with singles they've worked on and the DJ plays them. Just some fun ideas, not to say that all parties need to be that way, but this kind of interactive exchange really strengthens the bond of the community.

NYC "dance clubs" - Security in clubs is really damaging to a healthy psychedelic experience. It's like having a party inside a prison yard. Lofts and underground warehouses is where it's at for me. Art spaces in Dumbo and the likes.

Free Water - I'll bring a jug of fresh spring water with me and donate it at the door if you bring one. Free water is really special sometimes, especially when you really want a drink after dancing for an hour straight and paying $5 for a few sips just seems ridiculous and cruel.

Mixing - Let's bring the base in and then fade it out, wow! That never gets old for me; in fact it really strengthens the experience of listening to a track. And make sure to do it as often as possible, it's magic every time. (You know who you are)

Crazy Idea - what about getting a subscription to a trance organizer group. A monthly fee of $20 from members of the community. A few hundred members and the possibilities are endless. Imagine just getting into a party with your subscribers card. NYC Trance membership card offers many rewards and benefits, earn frequent party goer miles and free flights to special events. It's almost like stock in a trance company, everyone has a voice. Maybe weird? But you see where I'm going with this.

Anyways feel free to add your thoughts and ideas towards making a stronger and healthier trance tribe in North America.

id like to comment on your ideas.. i think some are cool and some are idealistic in the sense that they cannot really be executed in the current nyc environment.

1. requests - cool idea, brings you back to the idea that the dj is the no more then a person and not a god. taking requests is good in that sense. but think about this, what if the mastering of the cd you get from someone is not good, what if there is no mastering? what if the cd is skipping and now u look like a fool? what if the track is terrible and ruins the flow of your set? these are things i wouldnt want to mess with during a dj set (which i take very seriously).

2. dance clubs - you are right about what you say here... but we have to face reality. the current nightlife laws (cabaret, rave act etc) do not allow trance to go on safely in any other type of environment other then in established clubs. in any other type of venue you are risking the chance of having your party shutdown, having people arrested and producing a very dissapointed audience. i think its irresposible of a party organizer to do that.... so this is why none of them do it anymore.

3. free water - great idea..but again since clubs are there to make money and not for your entertaiment.. i dont see how they will allow this.... maybe if the promoter/organizer pays for it in advance....nice option. ill pay an extra $5 on the ticket for that feature.

4. mixing - fade in/out mixing in 2005 on cd-j's is INEXCUSABLE sorry to tell those mixing on a computer, or anything like that.... DAT is 10 years ago, Vynil is dead psy wise.... no reason why anyone who made it up there shouldnt know what they are doing. if thats the case - go home and practice first.

5. subscription - cool idea - i hope it works with the cut throat competition and the way some organizers treat their collagues in this city.... i would totally be into that idea           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

Free water is a difinite NOT. That is because, according to some analysts water will be more expensive than oil one day...soon. Clubs can't afford to give free water. But then there is always tap water

Requests: Nice idea which might work because local DJ's are not gods, nor they want to be treated like ones. But just imagine the line of people trying to get to the DJ.

Security: Let's be real. Clubs impose near maximum security measures and that is not going to change anytime soon. That's why loft parties and secret outdoor events rule...but where are those lately?

I got it. I couldnt solve the riddle the first time but now I did.

You want it to be in a loft or underground something like a basement.

no security and free water.

1 hour of dj request and basic mixing.

and from the previous post you wanted a dimmed light before the show and when everybody gets there the show begins.

When I summed all this I relized that you want to go party at somebody home or basement where not only the water is free the booze and food is most like free too.

GREAT... When is this party? And Who is willing to donate their apartment or basement.

Some of the text was edited for parental control reasons.

I have a feeling that loft parties and non-club parties are going to start coming back...

well im all for the water discounts
screw paying 5 dollars for a water, i just grab a cup while the bartender isnt looking and go filler up in the bathroom ... i think they might make more profit if they sold em for 3 dollars, people would buy more.
infact NYC tap water is better than what we have here in NC...

as far as security, i talked to a couple of the guys at the TDC party last month, they were nice as could be.

as far as the "open mic" dj set, i dont think so... the reason djs are booked is because they have good taste and will probably be able to string together a set of tunes that creates a flow... a bunch of rando tracks from the crowd would be fun, but that seems to me more like a plan for an afternoon producers forum somewhere...

fyi, thats actually one of the main reasons why club owners laugh in the face of promoters/organizers when they hear their pitch for a psytrance night. imagine being a club owner... you wanna operate from 11-8am and not use my bar??? makes no sense business wise. and dont give me that 3$ theyll buy bs.... been there done that, they dont. psytrancers usually wont be heavy on the bar like other events the clubs are used to... we come "prepared" from home or go to our "own" dancefloor bartenders... think about it...           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

....leave it to mukti baba to synthesize and spit out the essence... !!

and of course, in between the house parties, we have muktiji's very own TDC...

Less important than all the nitty gritty reality details - according to me - is the HEART ... of which my TDC babies have a lot...!!! Closest to Goa we can get over here.

...Nasos, come with us in Feb to Goa and you'll see what trance is ;-) No hired 'security,' just a lot of caring people who keep the violent dudes in line; lots of sunshine; parties all over the place with LOTS of dudes trying their hand at mixing - even the fade-in, fade-out type you like from the guys just gettin started....

(but still the water isn't free ;-) Scarce resource in the motherland.... )

Judging by your post, you'll love Goa ... Or maybe you already do and that's the inspiration for your search here!!!

In the meantime, please come to the next TDC party...cuz that's what we people of the heart have got here! Stay away from avalon and exit and you'll feel healthier and happier and more psy-full, i guarantee...

...so when is the next one, TDC babies? in a few weeks???

haaha try doing that at spirit if you are lucky enough to get past the bathroom attendant nazis and get water its only hot they have no cold water in the bathroom!! $$$$$$$$ its not pleasant but water is water still it just feels strange at times slugging back a bottle of 100 degree tap water to cool you down.

Club events can vary a lot...I agree with it being about the heart, but the words I think of it in terms of is whether the psytrance transforms the club or the club transforms the psytrance. Both the last TDC parties had all the heart I could ever want-Club 7 was 100% transformed by the psytrance (Whereas the psytrance was 100% transformed by Avalon). But even though Trance in the City had all the heart in the world and I had an incredible time, at the periphery of my mind I was still aware of things I could've done without-a small slice of the crowd, lots of security, raised dj booth, etc. I prefer clubs with no raised dj booth, no security, refillable water sink-style, etc...the party Club 7 was my best experience at a club ever. Probably not coincidence that they didn't have their alcohol liscense yet so I figure they weren't 100% operational. The apples in the morning were a very appreciated touch that really represented the overall vibe of the party in my book. But that space clearly wouldn't have worked for Trance in the City, so I certainly can't complain...But I do hope TDC and other organizers use spaces along the lines of Club 7 more when the circumstances allow for it.

I just read about this cabaret law in the Village Voice earlier, hopefully I'll have the chance to find out more about it soon.

While I definitely sympathize with the thought that organizers need to throw parties at clubs for economic and legal reasons, I do hope they'll continue to look for other spaces. I personally would rather go outside the city to attend a party with heart and all local djs than see my favorite acts at Avalon. That way you don't need to make all the compromises a big budget often entails, and it's good fun anyway! Admittedly, I'm still fairly new here and I don't know the law enforcement issues, but I'd guess there are options somewhere between clubs and lofts that can be utilized...time will tell I suppose.
