for me it's:
1 for the music
2.0 for the order
1 for the mixing
1 for the way the DJ acts on stage (hate those robots)
just throwing my 2 cents in the jar.           Both teams played hard

2.5 - for the mixing-
1.5 - fot the tracks
1.0 - for the order
IMO a good DJ is not just someone who has good tracks, he has to be able to do some amazing spins as well!! But on the other hand i hate listening to the same tracks over and over, so some new tracks can only make things better!

A good DJ I would say is someone who knows his music, has good technical work, but most important, someone who can put their ego aside and be the filter that transforms energy from the crowd and the surroundings through the music back to the crowd. Therefore a good DJ needs to be very sensitive, to be able to feel.

i think that a good DJ is also Experience, and good ear and good technical work, but ofcourse good music...so i'll have to say :

2 for the music
1 for the order
2 for the mixing

Borris,
you are unusual for a trance dj though, no?
every dj i can remember having heard (and you do need, i think, to know what they are doing to fully appreciate it) has done pretty damn short mixes, you know, a minute tops... now techno and progressive house djs are a different story (and hip hop / drum and bass for that matter). I have never heard you, but from what you said in that 'the set' thread in top10 i can only assume you do some pretty special and different stuff to most people           >>love will tear us apart...<<

2 - for the selection
1 - for the order
1 - for the mixing
1 - for the dj performance (some styles of trance suit djs who look controlled and steady behind the decks - some tracks though do require the dj to thrash arround a little - dont you hate the ones that look bored!)

I agree completely, dislike DJ's that look like someone just died in their family.

A Track Selection
B Order
C Mixing
D Personality

Borris, as much as the DJ can do wonders with the music, I think that if you pick good tracks, the artists know what they're doing much better than 99% of the DJs. Of course you can build your own music, but don't you think there are more than enough VERY talented artists that do that already?

2 order
1 tracks
1.5 mixing
0.1 acting (I don't mind if I see the DJ busy at work )           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

Kaz, No I don't. I became a DJ because this is my Instrument as an Artist. and I think that I'm as good an Artists as most of them out there, I really don't like the division between producers and DJ's I belive that they all are artists.
And no, unless you create somthing new on the DJ stand you have no place there. this is a basic concept in art. don't do it unless you are doing something new (and a set made of small existing pieces is indeed something new, loke a collage, it's an old art discussion about the use of readymade in art).
but this is only if you consider the DJ as an Artist (and that's the only reason why I am on stage).           Kinetic Honda GmbH, Worldwide Supliers of Quality noise.
