The senses can not be segregated.

I get what you mean but with Synaesthesia it's not just a case of senses converging.

The thing is, when a synaesthete sees a colour or smells a smell as they hear a sound, that colour or smell doesn't actually exist. If it did, everyone would see or smell it and that sight or smell would be uniform to everyone. It is not so much a matter of real senses being combined but rather that of one true sensory experience triggering another sense to 'lie' to the brain - or to fool the brain into believing that it is receiving information that it actually isn't.

If every time i hear the telephone ring i see a purple glow and smell peppermint the most interesting question is 'why purple' and 'why peppermint' - why not green and aniseed?

Because it is the same sight and smell every time it is almost like the brain has conditioned itself to link real sensations to specific 'phantom' ones - like some kind of strange mental database of subconscious links.
If this is the case then another interesting question is, how did these associations come about? It is hardly something that can be 'pre-programmed' into the brain because every day we experience new things - and hence the need for a whole new set of 'links'.

It is well known that associations can be created through such techniques as classical conditioning but creating these associations is often a lengthy focused process. Is the mind of a synaesthete more susceptible to behavioural conditioning... susceptible to the extent that these associations occur instantly on a subconscious level?

Imagine if the ad-men could crack the secret of how these associations are created... you would be tasting Coca Cola and smelling Big Macs every second of every minute of the day!
Am i the only one who believes in solipsism?
